If Reddit is accurate, people there leave the keys in their snowmobiles for just that purpose: for a neighbor to save themselves from a polar bear. Reddit also said that it was required to carry a firearm there. Of course, there's no guarantee that gun will scare away a polar bear that decided it is going to eat you if it can just catch you.

Why do the people in the video say the guy was very brave? He provoked the bear, ran away and even dropped his gun.

Video would have been vastly better if the Polar Bear hopped on another snowmobile to chase after him.

Probably a dumb question here but the gun couldn't be used to defend himself? Was it that the gun would be too weak to take down the bear? or was it that it's illegal to kill the bear even in situations of self defense?

It says the video was taken from a hotel, which means he was likely attempting to scare the bear away from an area with people. And then when it didn't work and the bear charged, he didn't panic and just got on the snowmobile. He specifically dropped the gun so he could drive the snowmobile.

Bears can get shot and still charge at you depending on the bullet. He probably knew it was better to just jump on the snowmobile than take a chance shooting it and hoping it hit correctly and disabled the bear

Yeah, shooting a bear is FAR from a sure thing of taking it down.

Bears can take shotgun blasts to the face and still kill you. They are extremely hardy animals. Pepper spray is more effective than firearms but still not 100% effective.

if its a strong enough weapon, sure, if you hit it in the head. but a bear sprinting straight for you makes that a dicey proposition and if you miss you're dead. bears are really fast and you missing and shooting it somewhere non vital isnt going to do a whole lot
