I think if you compare white collar to white collar jobs, Japanese work culture may still be worse than the US. But the US also has this thing where many people are forced to work multiple part time jobs or supplement their main job with part time and gig work, which is much rarer in Japan. Being working class or poor in the US is a LOT worse than Japan.

But even with white collar jobs, the trend in Japan has been to get better. It's slow, like all changes in the country, but the culture is moving towards less unpaid overtime, more flexibility in working hours, and more accommodations for things like spending time with your family. Whereas in the USA it seems like companies keep getting worse and worse.

That's why I said maybe. 20 years ago, Japanese work culture was definitely worse. Right now, it seems like they're pretty close to each other and you could make a case either way. 20 years from now, unless something changes, the USA is going to be so much worse.

Boy I got bad news for you on that one. Japanese motorcycle riders and removing mufflers is a tradition that is very much still alive.
Eh, at least its not as bad as here. Or maybe I just got super lucky. Because no matter where you are here, youll hear that annoying shit.

I had a traditional Japanese breakfast at my hostel and it was served with natto. I can't stand it, the taste is not great but the stickiness is killing me. How do I gracefully eat this

Also I will say the only thing I dislike about visiting Japan is using chopsticks. I hate using chopsticks

I had natto too. My hotel offers it at breakfast. The taste is rough but I went three days in a row eating it. Not only is the taste rough. It is so messy and sticky. The trick is to try to have it with rice to tey and dilute the flavor. Still really hard. Reminds me of trying vegemite for the first time.

Going to Tokyo today by Shinkansen for my last leg. Will be earing dinner at Luidas Bar tonight in Akihabara. Tomorrow, going to a comedy club and hoping to see Hard Gay's comedy duo do stand up along with other groups like Cowcow and New York. Then a festival in Kanagawa and then Disney Sea the next day. Busy stuff

This right here annoys me the most about finding a place to eat, not even the cheap part just finding healthy food to eat out in general is hard.

I love natto. If the taste bothers you, mix it with a fried egg (or scrambled). Maybe a dash of something like tabasco as well. Good source of vitamins and protein.

Holy shit ive been having so much fun

I can't believe the amount of cool people I've met here from discord

Gives me faith in humanity tbh

I haven't met anyone from CE in Japan, but I have met one of my online friends who was vacationing here the same weeks I was in 2023 in Shibuya once, and then I did go to my Japanese office branch and ate at Zauo with them. I'll say one thing. Japan is like what America could have had if we weren't so stuck up. I really love it here. It feels more normal. A sense of normalcy I haven't had in almost 10 years.

- idk if the karoshi thing (death by overwork) is actually true, people seem to come and go on the standard rush hours (8 am and 6pm). maybe it's only specific companies and people who really want to climb the corporate ladder?

It's true many years ago, but now the situation is probably different. It probably still exist somewhere, but even then, very extremely rare.

But such thing did exist in Japan, at least. I mean, that's why they have their own term for it (karoshi).

You can look them up there (assuming you know the Japanese name).

Also there are 25,000 people in my town. I assume even smaller ones than this also have them. I have seen some in some really remote places.

I just returned home yesterday and man was that a nasty return. Almost everything went wrong, overslept and almost missed my plane back, terrible US TSA shit, United lost one of my bags and I had to wait around for them to get it to me, missed my train back to my house and so much more. Glad to be home but absolutely hate dealing with US-related immigration and transit.

I am happy to say I made this trip a lot more about getting new clothes which I wanted to do, trying to use my bad Japanese, and trying new foods, as scary as they were. I tried burdock root, lotus root, uni sushi, squid sushi, natto, red rockfish lots of various foods I had no idea what they were and more.

We did have one mentally scary event where we were out late at like 12am and hungry for food. We found a place called Dandadan which seemed to have a collab with the actual anime. Went there not knowing that. Just had high reviews and it was open, so we were open to checking them out..... the staff was highly energetic. One would yell things out and everyone in the restaurant would respond back kinda like a military thing. They were all happy and fun. We felt good going in. Then we looked at the menu. Almost all meat there was horse. I had no interest. My brother had no interest. And we were very, very hard pressed to find any food we were actually open to trying here. We also are the type not to walk out of anywhere once we sit down so we were like 'What the fuck do we do now?' .... but thankfully, he found a 'chicken wing gyoza' he was fine eating and I was thrilled there was a normal chicken salad there so I got that. We also got the collab sodas and holographic Dandadan cards which was cool.

I love the idea of going to random places but man, walking into a place like that unexpectedly can be nerve wracking when you have limited options like that.

Had to look that up. Gobou. Crazy thing about that. It's almost entirely imported from China, but Chinese people don't eat it. They even had a special on NHK where the interviewed people who worked at a farm for it in China and none of them ate it either. But my Chinese wife and inlaws love it. Try Gobou fries sometime if you get the chance.

I dunno when and where I'd ever be able to but will try to keep that in mind if I remember. The burdock was in my soup curry in Sapporo. It was honestly one of my favorite ingredients in the curry. Very interesting situation if that is true (and I don't doubt it).... not bad at all.

If you travel yearly or more its absolutely worth it to look into global entry. $120 for 5 years. It includes TSA precheck so even on domestic flights you get that benefit. Makes travel much better.

Oh, I have global entry. I absolutely love it. It has 100% saved us from legs of this stressful trip.

Got back home yesterday as well and already talking with people about an early 2027 revisit to Japan. Missed out on the rural areas because my friend was addicted to Pokemon Frienda for half the trip.
