I watched some Youtube videos on it years ago and thought it looked neat. The Switch version was on sale for 10 bucks, so I got it (my PC isn't really suited to modern games)

Well, the reviews I checked before getting it seemed legit: The controls definitely suffer on Switch. You can really tell the game is optimized for a mouse. Moving items is kinda clunky, but not so much that I haven't been enjoying the game. I just got the Soil Centrifuge, which lets you make a few basic resources from soil, so I loaded up on canisters and spent like 20 minutes devouring a mountain. <_<

I will say I'm not a massive fan of the caverns, just for the sudden drops. You have to be careful, or you can dig through a floor and drop 50+ feet. If the fall doesn't kill you, being too far away from your oxygen line will, and it's difficult to climb back up with limited time. And the limited storage space on your person means lots of trips in and out, thought I think this gets a lot better once you unlock some more crafting options.

I tried it once, I went in blind and didn't make much progress. I don't recall now what exactly I got hung up on, but it was something I couldn't quite figure out. Relatively close to the start, maybe 2 hours in.

Some resources are hard to find early on, or just plain not available on the starting planet.

It's funny, you can unlock the Soil Centrifuge from a mission that requires Clay to craft a part. Clay is damn near impossible to find, so instead I unlocked the Soil Centrifuge with research points, and then used it to make clay...So I could complete the mission to unlock the Soil Centrifuge. Meh.

Yeah looks like I had gotten far enough to start experimenting with various compounded items that required multiple bases stationed across multiple planets. Don't remember too much of what we were doing and why, but that seems like mid to late game to me. If I recall correctly though, the starter planet does actually have decent clay deposits. They just don't like to spawn near your starting base.

I loved the terrain manipulation but I've never been a big survival game fan. So I just ran around exploring while my friend built up the base and stuff. Pretty much the same thing I did in minecraft back in the day.

I played it for a while a few years ago. I remember having a blast with it. I really like how "mining" and managing/storing resources works in that game.

Really? Admittedly I'm still early-mid game, so I haven't gotten a lot of the more advanced crafting yet, but so far the storage options kind of suck. >_> I think some later things help a lot with that though.

Like, right now my main storage is the Medium Storage which is just a big flat board that holds 8 resources. Later on you get resource containers that hold like 200+.

I remember eventually being able to craft all the large storage containers, and also driving around the planet and creating roads all the way down through different underground biomes, towing a bunch of storage units behind me. I just liked the way the game handles storage, it's a lot different than other survival/crafting games I played.

That makes sense, I was thinking of Stardew Valley and how I can just dump all my crap in a few chests, buy a Workbench, and craft using any item. Astroneer's system requires you to kind of organize and know where stuff is.

And from some videos I've seen, the mining/resource gathering is a ton more effective once you unlock the large truck. I should really get to a new planet so I can get the resources needed for this endgame stuff...But to be honest I'm still having fun making a more basic base and exploring the first planet.

And if any one's interested, the makers of Astroneer recently announced a new game set in the same universe.

This is my youngest sons favorite game ever. I cant pull him away from it! I have watched him play the game a bunch-it looks cool.

He loves building games of that type. He played Starfield and just built cool elaborate bases the whole time. Did not do any quests at all.

I'm not skilled or patient enough for this kind of thing (plus it would suck on Switch), but people make some incredible stuff in this game.

I was hooked on it for like a month, got absolutely obsessed with trekking to the center of each planet and activating them, then following that whole quest to its conclusion. I also did the snails. After that I completely lost interest. There were other missions, but I honestly felt like I did everything I wanted to.

I even had a checklist written up of everything to bring to a new planet with me, so I could set up a functional base immediately. It was lots of fun. Played it on Series X

I am this way too-I dont do any of the building stuff in games. But my son has that kind of mind, and he has built amazing stuff in Astroneer, even on Switch. Kid is going to be an engineer.

He was actually sitting in the back seat on the way to school a couple weeks ago and said to his Mom with all seriousness: I really want to be an engineer, but I am not sure I am smart enough. I may settle for being a lawyer like Dad.

I agree with him that if I can be a lawyer anyone can, so I thought it was really funny! But I cant believe what he can build (in and out of games) at such a young age. He is also extremely smart (I know every parent says that, but trust me). I wish I had that kind of mind.
