I liked how Oblivion felt more like a proper RPG with proper RPG classes/builds and/or the freedom to do whatever you wanted instead. The leveling system was just beyond broken to the point that it made it worse than most games out there. Hopefully they fixed it. There have certainly been plenty of proof of concepts out there from modders.

Yeah, the leveling system was fucking bonkers.

Unless you properly and meticulously picked the right stats, or just outright didn't level up at all, you could quickly find yourself being overwhelmed by enemies that previously weren't that difficult.

For example I was able to pretty easily deal with Clannfears when they started showing up. Could kill one in less than ten hits and could handle small groups if It didn't let them go full gank squad on me.

Fast forward about ten levels, where you'd think I'd be absolutely stomping them into the dirt. Wrong. I had to dance around them and cheese the fuck out of them, because I'd die in just a few hits, whereas they were damage sponges that took more than double the hits previously that it took to kill them. And don't get me me started on how bandits level, going from trash to OP freaks running around in the best armor in the game that actually contradicted lore.

That is one thing Skyrim absolutely does better, with how it handles level scaling. It isn't flawless, but there is the sense of progression as you go up in levels where you feel stronger as you level up.

I'd like to see a mixture of Skyrim where some areas have a level range they scale to, and lock at depending where you are when you first enter, and others that are just static. Like where you start should have static low level enemies no matter your character level, but there should be areas that will stomp your ass if you're unprepared. Say you're level 20 and unless you have excellent mastery of the mechanics, you will get stomped by enemies hard coded to be in the 40s or higher. But level up and improve your skills and you can come back and stomp them. That is a progression that feels satisfying.

Not like vanilla Oblivion, where the leveling is the one thing that nearly ruined the game for me.

It was quite hilarious how you could just get filthy rich by just repeatedly raiding marauder dungeons and sell daedric sets.

Speaking of the goofy leveling system, try waiting to show up to Kvatch. Instead of weak little scamps running around you'll get those Clannfear assassins that deal fifty bajillion damage. You'll feel less like a hero and more like you've stepped into the wrong end of one of Hircine's Hunts.

You have no clue how happy I am I'm not alone in this. The first time I played Oblivion I ended up quitting and restarting because of this. I couldn't beat that mission and learned I had level combat primarily so I made a new character and got it strong enough before I did the not directly combat related skills.

My very first character was an Unarmed brawler type.

I don't remember most of it, but I remember getting to Kvatch, entering the Gate, and finding an Imp.

Charged that motherfucker like a rhinoceros, lined up a perfect haymaker square in its stupid fucking nose.

Health goes from 100 to 99.99999999.

Imp flails about with one noodley little arm.

My health goes from 100 to -75.

I make a new character.

I didn't level a ton before going to Kvatch, but I didn't head straight there either. There were flame atronarchs everywhere and they would just butcher the guards that are supposed to help you. It was such a slog.

I ran into that issue on the defend kvatch mission. Loaded a slightly older save and made a 100% chameleon on touch skill to protect an npc since 100% chameleon in oblivion means the AI straight up doesnt know that entity exists.

The rest was handled with another busted as fuck custom lighting on touch spell.

It is near impossible to keep them alive when your level is high enough. They don't get stronger at all.

Tbh I don't think I've ever done Kvatch at a level lower than 20; the first playthrough was brutal, but after finally conquering that hell it would've felt like like a copout to settle for fighting scamps and flame atronachs on repeat playthroughs, lol.

Somehow I managed to keep my bro Ilend Vonius (the lone survivor you find in the Oblivion Gate) alive to the end on my first playthrough; dude was flat-out naked due to all his armor breaking lol. Everyone else naturally got wiped out.

Every playthough since I've made it my personal mission to keep every NPC alive through the entire sea of Xivilais and Daedroths and Storm Atronachs. Sure ain't easy, though; you need some powerful custom spells to tear through the daedra fast enough, and a Heal Other spell at minimum. Even then it takes a bit of savescumming; that idiot who runs from the chapel to unlock the gatehouse is particularly suicidal.

I keep reading/hearing that Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles will be included. The deluxe edition will add a few little goodies like the horse armor and some gear. I don't know about Mehrunes Razor, Battlespire, The Orrey, etc.. add ons whether they will be available in deluxe, come available later as microtransactions, or whether they will exist at all in remake.

I just hope Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles are included in the standard edition and are not only part of deluxe edition. Also hoping that both will be available as physical copy.

Well, one downside to the more uniform color scheme is that it won't be as easy to spot all the various NPCs who die in the grass in random spots because they cannot survive their weekly or monthly trips across the map.

Oblivion really needs a Detect Dead spell. And to have Reanimate as a craftable spell effect once you learn Risen Flesh.

While I joked about the Seducers I do wonder what will happen to the highly inappropriate Orc in the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary: the one that brags about killing children and stealing women's underwear. Also, will they change how Nords are portrayed? It felt like 95% of the characterization of Nords in Oblivion was a fantasy world version of, "I like beer!"

The Saints and Seducers Creation was released for Skyrim in 2019, and the worst that happened to the skimpy armor is that the skirts got lengthened a little bit; going back now and seeing the original Seducer Armor, I honestly don't mind the change.

I don't see them changing Gogron's lines. His story about slaughtering a girl at her sixth birthday party isn't any more ridiculously over-the-top now than it was in 2006, and Telaendril could've just as easily given him her 'undergarments' freely.

The only Nord I remember having any noteworthy lines about drinking was Newheim the Portly. I guess there's also Skjorta in Bruma who likes to get drunk and run around town at night. Most Nords in Cyrodiil have acclimatized to Nibenean culture - you probably wouldn't even notice they were Nords if not for them being slightly taller and having Wonder Woman's voice - and the ones living south of Bruma usually only bring up their Skyrim heritage in regards to being glad that they're no longer freezing their asses off there.

On the other hand, one of the potential 'problematic' characters that comes to mind is Dumag gro-Bonk, the flamboyant gender-nonconforming Amber blacksmith in Bliss. No issue in and of itself, but given the implication that all the quirky NPCs living in the Shivering Isles are not all there mentally, it's possible people could take offense to it.
