This is probably going to hurt a lot.

I think I'm going through a mid-life crisis kind of thing. I'm both excited and scared. Getting my board on Friday.

Tell me this is a mistake.
Are you mad at your skeleton and want to punish it for its hubris?

I really want to pick up roller blading again, but I'm nearly 40, and weigh 100 lbs more than I did when I used to rollerblade. Also I live on a hill now, so might not be a great idea lol.

Thanks. This is exactly what I need. Keep trying to talk me out of it! Though it's only making me want to prove myself even more that I can do it!

Yea, I'm wanting to use it as a way to get more active and healthy. Cuz... I haven't really been motivated lately.

My knees are hurting for you. I always wanted to skate, but I was always too uncoordinated to do it. I'd let my friends skate and I'd be the cameraman.

Oh, I'll be fully geared up. Also, gonna take things REALLY slow. Just going to cruise around for a while to get real comfortable again. Then maybe work my way up to some light transitions. If I ever feel comfortable trying tricks again, I'll probably practice on the grass before I actually go all out on concrete.

We'll see. This could also just last a week. Lol
Even as a kid, I literally couldn't even stand motionless on a skateboard without it flying out from under me and throwing me onto my back like an overturned turtle.

I recently got back into skating at 37.

I actually found it easier to both ollie and fall from the increased muscle mass. There were quite a few times I went flying and easily caught myself on the pavement in the push-up position when that used to hurt my wrists as a kid. Granted, I've been weightlifting and doing martial arts nonstop since I stopped skating around 2002 but that goes to show how good working out is for you.

Every aging skater should do burpees IMO. They really train you to be able to control and catch your bodyweight on the ground.

I REALLY want to actually try to really skateboard. I had this shitty skateboard/long board hybrid thing that wasn't really that good at cruising or for tricks for my first one but it's how I learned how to ride at a basic level at least. And then my brother gifted me a longboard that I ride at my uni.

Wish I had an extra couple of hundred dollars I could drop on a decent beginner board. >_>
Just go on Amazon and order a complete for $50-100. Pre-mades have come a looong way since I was a kid and there are legitimately good cheap skateboards now. Andy MacDonald had a good line of cheap boards on Amazon around 2010 (got a great one back then for 50), but I don't know if he still sells those.

I bought my newest one at a local skate shop to support a small business and I honestly regret it. Ended up paying over $250.

That's awesome! Yes I was on a board the other day and a lot of it came back to me instantly, like muscle memory. But I'm definitely not in shape like I used to be... I'm more worried about trying to get off the ground and doing tricks. But I'm going to slowly try to get there.

I bought a ccs complete off Amazon for around 80 bucks. Had great reviews and a lot of people were suggesting it as a beginner board.

I can't believe CCS is still around and selling good budget boards, just like the 90s. IIRC a brand name complete skateboard from their catalog in the 90s was $100, so it's awesome they can still undercut that.

By the way, highly recommend just starting with 10-20 burpees in the morning. The push-up portion will help make falling easier. The 30s are considered athletic prime for some athletes; you still have the physicality of youth but also knowledge and wisdom from age. No reason to consider oneself dead and buried at that age.

since you have to relearn do it on your hands you can be famous for skate boarding elusively while doing hand stands

plus think o fit that has to be safer as your head is closer to the ground so if you fall its less likely to break your neck

(mods this is an obvious joke)

Not a bad idea I'm I'll definitely do that!

Are you advising that based off experience or assumption?

Andy Macdonald is a big name and he sold absolutely mindblowing completes on Amazon for the price. "Amazon complete" makes it sound like Amazon is making their own and selling them, which isn't the case. These are skate companies like Darkstar and Amazon happens to be one of the distributors.

I commend this sentiment, but the price difference is really substantial. It's why nobody should shame lower income folks for shopping at Walmart instead of a farmer's market or local grocer. If money is not an inhibitor, then yes, buy local.

I went with my local childhood skate shop, but I definitely paid way too much for a skateboard.

Good options, but the current Andy Macdonald complete on Amazon is $35. That's amazing for poor people who want a good skateboard, but everyone else should use your links instead.

Alright, first mini session today!

I didn't fall... So that's a good thing.

But I couldn't really land anything. Really I could only ollie and not even that high... I tried some kickflips and I'm able to flip the board but I'm too scared to actually commit and get my back leg up after popping.

Riding around feels pretty good. Was able to manual pretty good still. So I'm feeling pretty good. Just gotta practice and get over the fear.

My legs absolutely hurt though... Damn I forgot how much you put them to work. My joints feel fine though. For now lol

Nice, glad it went well.

I found I need the trucks much tighter than I did as a kid. Too easy to turn too far in either direction with a heavier bodyweight.
