I realize they're better for the eyes and generally look better under some circumstances
but after 30 years of regular ass white-dominant-space on my screen I'm having a really difficult time adapting to the idea of dark themes

This, changing from dark theme to white theme is basically a flash bang to the eyes that happens every 2 weeks on gamefaqs.

there's something just ... aesthetically difficult for my mind to process.
Like black mouse cursors. I love the idea of black mouse cursors. Have zero issue working with it on the macbook that they gave me for work because I don't really have a choice. But if I try to set it up on Windows, it just looks so out of place because I've been using a white cursor for three decades

Maybe I should try again though.

After getting used to a light environment for a long time, and suddenly switching to a dark theme, I think the main thing for me has just been sticking to it and making it your new normal.

Reminds of that one factoid that floats around that says it takes 21 days to turn something into a habit.

It is mostly convincing yourself. I first went to dark mode when my eyes were giving out. Then I got annoyed with it. Now that I read your topic I am trying it again. You have to be in the mood for it I think.

Yes, switch to dark theme and use your device in low light environments for a couple of days. Bedtime, movie theaters etc. After a few days switch to light theme and you'll quickly switch back to dark.

My phone has a setting where it switches the theme to a light setting during the day and a dark setting at night. I have trouble adjusting to and dedicating myself to dark mode, but this is an alternative that seems to work out well for me.

Darker the better, easier on the eyes and more energy efficient.

OLED dark theme and knowing you're actually saving energy per pixel that is off, mmf.

It it is just more comfortable for me. There was no adjusting.
