Family is quite literally the only anchor keeping me here for now. I want to leave but my parents are older and I don't know what I'd do. I want to get out. I have an out as well. But that would be abandoning my parents and deep down, it would kill me to do it. But I feel I have no option within the next few years. My passport expires in 2028. I will most likely have to take that plunge before then and at this rate, probably very very soon.

I live in Canada. But I guess once the US annexes Canada I'll become an illegal immigrant and get a free trip to Mexico.

Also, it's actually really ****ing hard to emigrate to another country.

Moving to Pattaya Thailand next year, currently 48 so to get a retirement visa you have to be at least 50, on top of that Ive gotten into truck driving 5 years ago and absolutely love it so Im not ready to give that up just yet.

I have no need or desire to now frankly. Although I may try and retire in another country sometime into my 50s although I dont have a full plan for that yet.

Can't flee somewhere I'm not in.

I will say, though, I'm pretty sure I've taken my last trip to the US. These days I avoid sending any money into the American economy if I can avoid it.

I swear, the near poor is being pushed to the brink. More than half the stuff I own is hand me downs and I always have to look up free items or trash pick (spring time is best, whole dressers and all) and food I have to buy bulk and eat the same thing more than once a week, no variety whatsoever. Rent is freaking expensive and I live in the damn ghetto. Money assistance? Nope. I supposedly make too much. Food assistance? Again, make too much. You would have to be rich or totally poor and homeless to even get by. Or find a woman and have 8 children to try and 'beat the system'....which is also flawed.

I left at the end of 2021.

I haven't been back since. And I really hope that I don't have to come back for any reason during Trump's reich.

(The only reason to come back would be for funerals of close family members.)

Why not? New Zealand is a wonderful place. And it's so far away from the rest of the world, it's like the world's troubles don't affect it.

You research countries that have a relatively easy immigration process and visit. Then you pick the one you feel most comfortable with.

I picked Portugal, despite having no relatives here... nor speaking any Portuguese.

I picked it over Spain, because I wasn't too sure how Spaniards might like someone like me. Whereas Portugal was far more friendly.

And as soon as I made the decision, I started to learn Portuguese.

I don't think I would leave if Canada got absorbed. We have European roots in several countries, but giving up our pensions are non-starters.

It would be hard to make my daughter say goodbye to her friends, but she's young and will make new friends.

If our pensions are on the chopping block, then I'd try to get a buy-out, and get a one-way ticket to Scotland (is 3 generations in Canada too far removed?).
