A Stephen King story gets adapted every 15 minutes. A sequel that aligns with the books that is completely incomprehensible if you've only watched the Kubrick movie isn't going to draw a lot of attention.

it was talked about.

I liked it.

This was talked about a lot in 2019.
Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.
I actually made a topic about it back when I first watched it last year

thought it was really good

Dr. Sleep was a great book. Clearly Stephen King asked for it since he wrote it.

It was a decent book and a very good film.

Lots of people talked about it at the time.
Yeah, there was a lot of talk at the time. Both for the book and the movie. They were both well-received.
...I think I'm done here...
It was alright.

Definitely not the fate I wanted for Danny.

oh yeah, Rebecca Ferguson was in that. she's supposed to be like really brutal or creepy or something in it i guess. i love her in Silo. i should watch this at some point.

Its literally better than the first movie imo, such a fantastic sequel
I'm not a huge horror fan but I loved this movie. It's pretty sad honestly.

Actually, thinking on it, how exactly does Tony work, with the added context of Dr Sleep added to the mythos?

This was talked about a lot. Y'know, 5 years ago, when the movie came out, and also when the book came out, 5-6 years before that.

Its a better movie than The Shining ever was. Overall I feel like its probably better than the book, but I like some things the book did better.

Agreed. Odd that the weakest part of the movie was the ending part. A connection to the original film was needed I guess.

I thought the movie was fantastic.

It brought both movie and book universes to a good conclusion. It took the best of both of them and made it it's own thing.
I wrote a horror novel, called "Spare Parts." A whole damn novel! You can check it out, and other free short stories at http://www.aarondeck.com
That was a great movie

I just finished reading the Shining like 2 weeks ago. Went and rewatched the Kubrick movie for the first time in a long time. I can really see why King didnt like it. Kubrick changed enough to really alter what is going on, makes it seem like it is more about purely cabin fever than a possession with regards to Jack.

With that said, Im looking to eventually getting to Doctor Sleep. Just finished Rage and Im about to start The Stand, so I have a long way to go.

Because I agree on The Shining. Kubrick didn't do a very good job of adapting the book's themes of alcoholism, generational abuse, and what is needed to grow through them.

King didn't like it because it was about his own alcoholism, and Kubrick basically tossed that part of the story on the backburner. It was an extremely personal thing for him, and I'd be pretty annoyed myself if someone adapted it out so thoroughly.

On top of that, The Shining is about Jacks slow descent into madness, and in the movie, Jack Nicholsons performance makes it look like he was just crazy from the start.

I preferred the book by quite a bit, but I enjoyed that the film Doctor Sleep was a sequel to Kubrick's The Shining and not King's novel. Made for a different experience at the very least. And that's what makes The Shining so good too. The film is a poor adaptation of the book, but it's incredible in its own right. The book is my favorite of all King's works that I've read.

Dr. Sleep, although yes, it applies to the Shining as well. I thought the return to the Hotel from the first movie was a step down from the rest of the movie which was top tier. Something just felt off. Probably how the main villain was taken down is part of it.

Yup. They get to the hotel. They get settled in. Wendy is outside with Danny playing aaaaaaand Jack is already staring out the window at them like a crazy man who wants to kill them.

The movie also did a poor job of showing just how long theyd been there. I think I took over half the book before the snow actually started to fall. The Torrances make several trips to Sidewinder while the weather is still seasonally nice, and you really feel the time trudging along as Jack starts to question his own sanity. Not saying that the movie would need to do that much, seeing as there are considerable time constraints. But at least show the progression in a montage or something. That coulda been achieved in around a minute.

Counterpoint:

I don't want to imagine the hell that is trying to shoot a montage directed by Stanley Kubrick.

Poor Shelley Duvall suffered enough already.

Yeah...

The book is the story of a guy who is normal slowly become crazy.

The movie is the story of an already crazy person go absolutely bonkers.

I think the people that made the movie were given a really hard chore.

In the BOOK "world", the Overlook exploded at the end.

In the MOVIE "world", the Overlook did not.

So I'm sure that was hard for the film-makers to compensate for.

But, overall, I really liked the book.
And I thought they did a nice job in the movie, too.

Was really not a fan, either of the book or the movie. The Shining is a flawed but interesting haunted house novel, Dr Sleep is basically a poster child of later-era King overindulgence and giant conceptual swings that rarely land and ends up unbearably hokey and weird-for-the-sake-of-it.

The movie isn't much better and I actively disliked its attempts to tie itself to the Kubrick movie, which is much better than any of the other aforementioned media.

I think that was partly due to different perspectives of alcoholism from what I remember reading.

srry I don't like the things you like.

I find that period of Steven king from around Desperation right up until Doctor Sleep to be totally insufferable. He didn't hit a stride and start making things that interested me again until a year later with Mr Mercedes, and even that was a shaky start to a series that gets a lot better as it goes.

And I hold to it that the movie is a much more effective and scary horror story regardless. Everyone loves to focus on King's self insert alcoholism redemption story getting dropped and forget the whole last like, quarter of the book Kubrick threw out for the better where you have stuff like giant godzilla sized hedge sculptures attacking people and a werewolf chasing danny and telling him hes going to suck his cock off

I liked the book fine, but it's one of his books where the build-up is superb but the actual climax is just kinda fine and over with too quickly.
