Probably Altered Beast on the Genesis or Super Empire Strikes Back

Altered Beast wasn't particularly hard but I could never finish it because you couldn't get credits like in the arcade game and would invariably run out of lives. SESB was just mind bogglingly difficult, I don't think I ever cleared the first stage.
She/Her Crimsoness' Alt
Dynamite with a laser beam
If you use extra credits, you didn't beat the game.

Try Metamorphic Force. Hamster released it for PS4. It's really good, and not too difficult.

Probably something like I Wanna Be The Guy or some Kaizo Mario hack. Ikaruga is up there too.

The hardest time I ever had with a game was learning how to play SSF2THDR. But eventually I became one of the best of that small community.

Some kazio. Super Mario Forever. I remember downloading and was like, yeah never gonna play that again. I put it down almost as soon as I tried it.

This one. It was the first kazio I ever played. I didn't even know it was a genre back then.

IDK, probably Battletoads.

The game really is bullshit, it's so unbearably difficult that even with save states it's a big pain in the ass to beat.

Depends on how you mean "hard" but King's Quest 3 is the most brutal game I've ever played.

Haunted Castle

Early Castlevania with absolutely wretched controls/handling
Super Ghouls and Ghosts.

I don't know if I'd say it's the hardest, but I remember the first time I played Super Castlevania IV on the SNES.

I had so much trouble getting through that game.

But, when I finally beat it I felt so proud
"I dreamt I was a moron."
Out of games I've played at least a decent bit, I guess Dead Cells? I've put 25 hours into it and never beaten a run.

Not sure what the hardest would be overall though. Got it, XCOM EU on Impossible. Across god knows how many attempts I made it out of the first mission like 5 times total, and all of those runs died very quickly after.
Look, I can name a few instances in MY life where I tried to reach mutual understanding
and i can TELL you, always faster and easier to just kill em. Just is!
Oldschool rs probably. Its pvm makes me panicky af. The later game part of it (mainly the 3 raids, inferno, dt2 bosses) are deceptively difficult imo. Ive only down one of the raids so far and on entry mode and I can tell it'll take me a while to become competent at it. Can't imagine the more difficult stuff.

I'm a Taurus. Currently playing: Oldschool Runescape & DMC 3 Ubisoft Port. He/Him

Ys I on Nightmare

The bump system combat was a terrible mechanic and the last boss is literally bullet hell with a collapsing floor.
What came to mind was some random game I don't remember on the X-box with some kind of mecha-armored character (not actual mecha), where if you do a bunch of stick-click boost dashes or something in a row you briefly get infinite energy for boosting/flying/maybe shooting/etc. And some of the levels seem to be designed around using this to fly upwards.

I was probably playing it wrong.

So the actual answer is either Super Mario Maker 2 (due to what people make) or Terraria with the Calamity mod. Though that was probably because I never actually tried to seriously play a Touhou game on Lunatic.

Super Meat Boy maybe. Rabi Ribi on the hardest setting is up there though.

The hardest game I ever beat / conquered was Castlevania: Harmony of Despair completely single-player / offline.

but the hardest thing I've ever done is get 985,000 points in Pac-Man. It's like an hour of having to play perfectly, with many frame-perfect turns that need to be done.

I was upset I didn't roll the score.

BattleToads for me.

In the NES era a lot of games were challenging and came from that "eat your quarters" mentality to extend the shelf life of a game. Plus there was just cheap design and also hardware limitations of enemies off screen and respawning and with limited controls to make things difficult but I still never really felt like anything was too crazy bad.

There were a lot of NES games I didn't even think were very hard like Punch Out or Mega Man games where people claim they are hard. Even Ghosts 'n Goblins. I'm not an elite gamer by any means but many NES games I didn't think were too bad.

Games that challenged me were stuff like Ninja Gaiden original (world 6-2 the most) TMNT, and Blaster Master. These 3 games took up a chunk of my time in junior high but I ended up mastering them to where I could complete them without dying.

But BattleToads was just flat out tough. Also I didn't find it enjoyable enough to want to learn to master it. I don't mind tough if it is fun but that game was just kind of janky and not really fun.
