I love hearing this. Like, I am not a loud trans person. I usually keep to myself and if you saw me in public, you'd just see me blending in with others. I'd get by on the daily easily for that reason despite being who I am and the fact I wear a mask all the time anyways. But seeing that your small city library there even has LGBT events..... it's nice to hear honestly. I mean Hell, when I was in Japan, I remember seeing a news story about a trans boy on the TV and given what I could even make out, it sounded like the story was pushing sympathy in a good way, interviewing him and more. It really made me feel like being there would be okay after all.
You will see a lot of trans people on TV here. Quite a few celebrities (you probably know Utada Hikaru) and some talent (basically people that just appear on random programs). I only know one trans person in our city (very small), but I didn't talk to them much about how it was living here because it's kind of rude to get personal unless you know someone well here, so I can't give you any firsthand information. My town has a lot of pro-LGBT posters due to how big of a presence the Japanese Communist Party has here so it feels nice seeing that stuff at the train station. That said I know some of the larger cities have far right groups that have views similar to Trumpers in the US, they aren't a major force in politics currently, but they exist (Sanseito and Hoshuto for example). The lack of a religious basis for hating LGBT people and the rich history of LGBT here makes it feel somewhat safe.
