It's the little bit of storytelling that makes the joke. It would be stupid/unbelievable/lame for an adult to say, but present it as 'kids say the funniest (and the truest) things', and it works.

Now that you mention it, vets are another group we just pay lip service to. We like to honor them with a holiday and empty praise, but then cut their benefits and force them to be homeless.
