It IS dark out at 6 AM when I let the dogs out to use the bathroom, and with DST, 6 am becomes 7 am.
Unless you live somewhere tropical, there is a massive natural swing in daylight hours even without dst. If it's dark in the winter that's because it's winter. If it's dark out in the summer it's because you're up earlier than the vast majority of people.
Here in New Zealand the sun is coming up lately in the summer at about 430am. If we were on standard time it would come up at 3:30am. Who the fuck is going to school that early? Where I live is about as far south as NYC is north of the equator, so it's not at extreme latitude. The sun goes down here around 5pm in winter, and 10pm in summer.
When I was in Glasgow in Scotland, which is WAY further north than NYC, the sun would come up at like 9am in the winter. And that's on standard time.
Personally I would prefer DST being made year-round, but it would screw over people further from the equator. But that isn't what Trump is talking about.
