Working name, since I don't want to copy Nabisco's branding (just their idea, lol) is Black and White cake. It's my first time trying this cake, so here's hoping it turns out well.

I stole a black cocoa cake recipe from the Internet. Black cocoa powder is supposedly the secret ingredient of Oreos. I'm planning on making a shortening and cream frosting, hoping the substitution of shortening instead of butter makes it taste more like cream and less like butter. As a bonus, I'm betting it turns out whiter too. That'll go between layers, and on the outside, more of the same but with more of this black cocoa powder.

Here's half the batter (the other half is in the oven):

First layer took way too long to bake.

After an hour, I increased the temp from 325 to 350. It's probably because I using a 7" pan. In hindsight, I should have gone with the 9" pans. Not just for that reason, or even just because I have two of them, but because that would be closer to the radius: depth ratio of an Oreo cookie. Oh well. Next time I'll keep that in mind.

I set the oven to 335 for the next layer.

I leveled the first layer and tasted the excess. This tastes UNBELIEVABLY Oreo-like. Nabisco, your secret is out: Black cocoa powder!

Unpretentious Baker is the brand. I chose it because it was cheap. I had to order if on the Internet because I couldn't find any stores in town that sell black cocoa powder. Here's the recipe (I used whole milk):

Instead of the included frosting, though, I'm going to use my usual whipped buttercream but swap out the butter for shortening. That recipe is here:

Interesting thanks. I'd want the icing to be as close to the middle of oreos as possible in flavor but more whipped if possible. Yeah let me know how the final product taste.

Tired of all these places say they're oreo flavored when they aren't.

The frosting scared me. It came out having no flavor and being too stiff. But then I realized I could fix both problems by adding more whipping cream. And it actually did end up tasting a lot like Oreo cream.

I turned the second layer upside-down for the super sharp edge:

I kinda dropped the ball right at the finish line though. The dark cocoa frosting on the outside doesn't actually look or taste very good. If I were to make this cake again, I think I'll do a dark chocolate ganache for the outside (but keep the frosting on the inside. Anyway, here's the finished product (I can never get the frosting very smooth; oh well):

Well, almost finished. I managed to scrape a little more frosting out of the bowl to fill in some of those kinda visible thin spots.

Anyway, I'll report tomorrow on how everyone likes it.

You can see from these pictures that it's kinda coming apart when it gets cut:

Another problem the ganache would have helped with. It would also look prettier.

Anyway, everyone loved it. Personally, I think my cousin's wife's strawberry cake you can see a tiny bit of in the side of the picture outclassed it, but it still turned out really well.

Is the frosting in the middle different than the outside?

Yes, but only in a pretty small way. I made both in a single batch, and after putting the center frosting in, I added some black cocoa powder to the rest to frost the outside.

Like I mentioned above, if I make this cake again, I'll do the center the same way but use a ganache on the outside.
