No physical.

In 2009 Sony were rightfully trashed by gamers and the market for daring to release a digital only psp that you couldn't even play your discs on. The market was not ready for a digital only video game system yet.

Now, 15 years later... they got their wish. People will humbly accept ps5 and beyond becoming digital only, physical discs will become a thing of the past, and the markup for video games with absolutely no competition will mostly likely be triplefold.

Maybe those JRPGs villains were on to something about humanity being trash.
I don't think corporations getting what they want and rendering it so they own access to your entertainment instead of you is the victory march you're making it out to be.

From what I've Googled, it looks like physical sales only really plummeted in 2020, and we all know what happened that year that prevented people from going out and buying games in stores. Since then the numbers remain lower than they were before, but are remaining steady at their current levels.

Also important to note that typically when physical vs. digital sales numbers are reported, the digital side includes things such as DLC, subscriptions, and microtransactions in addition to the initial game purchase itself.

Validate your purchases and discredit the purchases of others whenever possible. Numbers objectively define quality and enjoyment.
Wait, people actually use UMD on their PSP?
Even on the classic PSP digital is preferred.

Well a lot of the games are digital only unless you really want to pay more through Limited Run.
If you can't say something nice, go ahead.

saspa always looking at the wrong angle. the psp go was trash because the network connections at the time weren't as strong and the games that were playable still weren't on the same level as console games, thus rendering it completely inferior and not a product worth supporting.

nowadays, most of that has been solved. the only problem is that there aren't any games to play besides tons and tons of ports, and rereleases of older games.

IIRC, a big issue with PSP Go was that a lot of PSP games were UMD-only, no option to buy them digitally. With modern systems I'm pretty sure everything is available digitally.
Harris/Walz 2024!
Physical copies can't just get its license revoked from me, so I'll always favor that from digital.

However I will say I have bought mostly digital games lately out of convenience, but I would always prefer physical for collection sake.

I never thought that the last holdout, crisis core, would get a console port, but it did. So that's every significant umd psp game now having a console port.

Still weird af to me that modern discs are essentially just a key that allows you to play the digital version of a game

Cartridges for life. Honestly it's a shame Nintendo didn't jump straight to the Switch model after the N64, that way Nintendo never would've had to go through a disc-based phase.

The Switch Cartridge is so tiny though. How can that tiny thing house an amazing breathtaking game like breath of the wild?

I own a XB1. Most games were on the disc but you had some that were day 1 patches with the remainder of the game. I'm comfortable with that. Thats the way it should be. When I buy a game I at least want most of the game that if I ever dont have internet I can still play it. Now I hate only games like the Division games. The 15 months I stayed and helped my friend. In the few moments I got me time I loaded it up and was met with internet required. I wanted to play the game solo. It should be a choice

It'll just turn video game hobby more niche, where it's between Nintendo players and PC players. Most people don't even have a PC in this day and age, let alone a gaming capable one

magic! I swear, they're like the gods of making great looking games with little space. Or hell, games with tiny space at all! I remember the second generation of Pokemon had just enough space left over and they decided to shove Kanto into it. Kanto wasn't even supposed to be in those games but they did it because they could and that's beautiful.

Modern cartridges are just digital storage device like flashdrives and SD cards
Micro SDs can store over a TB now.

Even if gaming goes 100% digital, consumers still
have the most effective method at their disposal for having an effect on prices. Not buying it.

Probably not for another generation, but Im a PC gamer and have been all digital for well over a decade, so I dont really care. I still want a disc drive in a PlayStation, but thats only for opening Blu-Rays so I can note down all the special features to make them easier to identify when I rip them.

They released the Playstation Portal whatever that was, and the PSP GO sucked. I do think it was a good idea to get rid of the UMD Drive but that system failed to sell. And then there was the Vita. At least I can play Lost Dimension on Steam. I had no interest in the Vita for various reasons but the PSP did kick ass even that dumb Go Version which well, I think that was a prototype for the Vita, but they were getting into Sega Genesis territory then, not that I would have thought of it until now.

Admittedly I don't follow video game news anymore, but I still felt like it was wild for Sony to stealth drop a random switch-looking peripheral (which I still haven't really looked up yet what it is/what it does) and it reminded me of the ps move way back during the wii era except that felt like there was more news surrounding it.

Glad someone remembers the playstation portal. I really loved the PSP. It's basically an indie (probably CFW paradise) but also you could just get a Steam Deck or some other handheld heh
