it was great but i saw it with someone who read the manga and they were actually upset that they were basically watching the manga just animated. funny the different perspectives there.

The only thing I have to complain about so far is their choice of subtitle color. For a show that is animated like this deciding to go with white subs is a little odd. Having the adult swim airing to be in japanese w/ subtitles is sort of strange in general only because they already decided to air that lame-ass rick and morty anime with japanese voices+subs beforehand, and its slightly exhausting I guess just to have 2 sub airings back to back.

I have a very bright 65 inch TV that is about 12 feet of so away from me and I thought it was annoying reading white subs on a mostly white background, so I would imagine this is way more annoying for people with smaller TVs sitting/laying in bed from about the same distance or even farther than I am.

For this reason, as well as the viewing experience of going back and forth, I have decided to watch each episode in Japanese without subtitles first. I know enough conversational Japanese that I get a lot out of it and it's full of emotion rather than technical details, so it works for this anime for me. Every scene and panel was carefully created so taking in the feel and sight is more important than plot minutiae. Then I can watch it again with subtitles.

I think it's the right approach here.

A pretty big appeal of JI's work is the visuals, and virtually every attempt to translate them into a more traditional anime style has fallen very flat. I think that this "manga come to life" style that replicates his visuals really well was the way to go, even if it apparently took them a long fucking time to nail down.

Just watched it, really glad we finally have a good Junji Ito adaptation, at least for this episode. IIRC it's only gonna be four episodes, so hopefully we get most of the good chapters. Still hoping for an adaptation for Hellstar Remina, but I'd really want a re-do of Gyo, since Ufotable did an underwhelming OVA a while ago.

yeah this was a great episode after the lack luster of bring ito's work into anime adaption and failing hard this style fits and works well hope tomie get's the same team when they get to it as well

The animation is phenomenal and I was so enthralled by it that it didn't even feel like 22 minutes. Definitely worth the wait.

So, going back to the chapters, looks like we got all of Chapter 1 ( Spiral Obsession Part 1 ), most of Chapter 2 ( Spiral Obsession Part 2 ) (except the denouement), all of Chapter 3 ( Scar ), and the very beginning of Chapter 8 ( Snail ).

With this pace, we're probably going to be cutting a few chapters, but we'll get most of it, and the main idea, of course.

From trailers I've seen, we've got Chapter 9 ( Black Lighthouse ) and Chapter 10 ( Mosquitoes ) coming.

They'll probably do much of Volume 3 as the latter two episodes, since that volume is pretty linearly told whereas the first two are more episodic.

Also it's possible we won't get Medusa, given in all trailers I've seen Kirie keeps her long her, which she has to cut after Medusa in Chapter 6, meaning she has short hair for pretty much the rest of the series.

Im not familiar with source material, so this is new to me. Just knew it was supposed to be creepy. It is living up to expectations. Looking forward to more

I will also add that the Mosquito chapter really fucked me up. I had to put the manga down for a few days after reading it.

I've read a few Junjo Ito stories and and the morals I remember are:

  • Amigara Fault: Don't get naked and jump in a hole
  • Tomie: Hot women are jealous psychopaths
  • Uzumaki: Damn, them spirals be crazy
  • Gyo: Don't make a stink virus and dump it in the ocean or it'll turn fish into walking stench tanks. Okay, this one might actually have a point about the horrors of war or something, but it's done in a very goofy way.
I don't think Junjo Ito really focuses on morals or allegories for most of his stories, he just thinks of a spooky idea and makes it really spooky.

I finally watched it. I wasn't super creeped out because I've always found the whole concept kinda goofy, but oh my god, the full body cringe when mom cut her fingers off.

Seeing the girl's head spiral is also a lot worse animated. It didn't bother me at all in the manga, but hoo boy, it was fucked up here.

I did end up going with the dub. I saw someone above complain about the white subtitles on a white background and I get that, but Max (or maybe just my TV) gives them their own black background. I found it to be really in the way. A lot of zoom in shots in this show and the subs would be taking up a quarter of the focus of the shot.

I watched it, and i'll be damned actual junji ito adaptation that actually works. Even when i am familiar with the source material, it still makes my skin craw. The voice acting, animation and sound design, especially the sound design really elevates the material.

After all the talk about how scary and freaky this would be, I actually found it silly and goofy and not really scary at all. The father obsessed with spirals was super goofy, especially the way he looked when he died; I couldn't help but laugh. I guess the young woman with the spiral on her head was a little freaky. I like the art style though.

ito's work doesn't have a point in them it's just horror with no explanation and a bit of comedy in it like for example in one of his work there a funny yet dark scene where everything went to hell and people are dying if they go out of their house but this one dude left anyway cuz he couldn't be late for work >_> and dies anyway

I genuinely dislike when writers feel the need to insert a moral just for the sake of having one.

There are absolutely times when you can just write an entertaining story and even present interesting themes without having a clear moral. I've seen so many examples of fiction just trying to insert a clumsy moral into the mix randomly and it almost always feels very awkward.

I like how based on the commercial/preview for the second episode they've already realized that white text on a near white background is ass. It was yellow and actually legible compared to the abomination that was before.

Other than that it's interesting.

Might have been at a later airing or something, because I know the actual first one in CST was all white, and it was awful.

It was only made worse by vision issues and medication that further blurs vision. It was hard to read, but it only added to the trippy surrealism of the rest.
