Has that always been a thing? Also, it's saying I'm no longer at my previous address... But that is my current address and has been for years. Just weird.

Right? I'm in IL, though. Firmly blue (in Chicago)

Just another way to disenfranchise voters.

Joke users insist that losing your right to vote because you haven't exercised it in a while is perfectly fine.

I don't know what criteria they use to purge the voter registration rolls in red states but "not voting for over 5 years after a notice" seems pretty harmless. You can register to vote online in Illinois, it appears to take like 20 minutes.

We need to kill the concept of voter registration immediately.
I apologize for nothing!

It takes like ten seconds. That isn't the point. At all.

There has to be some maintenance done on voter rolls.

My sister hasnt lived in my state (Washington) for over twenty years, has told them she doesnt live in the state, has voted in a different state for twenty years, and my parents still get her ballot every election (we are an all mail in voting state).

Only criteria should be 'You died', 'You're no longer an American citizen' or, 'You are guilty of something SUPER fucking bad like conspiracy against the United States'.

Edit: Or you moved elsewhere. But you would still be registered to vote in your current residence.

Anything else is just an excuse the right uses to hurt voters. What's stopping them from 'accidentally' forgetting to give a notice to someone who didn't vote the previous election?

Honestly though, this.

Once you turn 18, you should automatically be registered to vote. That shouldn't expire for merely not voting in a while.

You can die for your country at 18 but they want to play games with your ability to vote.

I 100% expect this to be their plan. They "accidentally" forget to notify someone that their registration was cancelled. So that person misses the deadline to get their mail in ballot and are forced to go vote in person.

At 18, as a guy I was already required to register for Selective Service. That alone should be all I have to do, literally for the rest of my life.

It just seems like something sneaky that republicans would put into laws. And I know the previous governor of Illinois was a Republican that was concerned about voter fraud.

But if this doesn't end up being anything nefarious, then great. It's just hard not to be wary of this stuff these days with the Maga crowd trying to disenfranchise voters.

But also, I made the topic legitimately asking if this is a new thing, as I've never heard of it.

"Concerned" is probably more apt.

They cancelled my voter registration over an "invalid mailing address"; an issue I had already resolved months prior yet the voter database somehow didn't get the memo

managed to get it fixed right before the primaries

Maybe they're avoiding a scenario where someone votes in more than one state due to the lack of residency documentation? I agree that there are ways to avoid that without registration though.
You are always the hero of your story, and a villain in someone else's. So, lose the ego, and be as nice as possible.
