BEIRUT (AP) Lebanons Hezbollah group confirmed on Saturday that its leader and one of its founders, Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut the previous day.

Nasrallah, who led Hezbollah for more than three decades, is by far the most powerful target to be killed by Israel in weeks of intensified fighting with Hezbollah. The Israeli military said it carried out a precise airstrike on Friday while Hezbollah leadership met at their headquarters in Dahiyeh, south of Beirut.

NPR was on the line with somebody and you could hear (presumably Lebanese) women wailing, crying and chanting in the background.

From my understanding, since the Lebanese government is pretty ineffective within its own border, Hezbollah was/is in effect a de facto government and security force for many of the Lebanese people. So of course the people who were reliant on Hezbollah for economic opportunity, security, food/water, are going to be upset.

That's not to defend any of the bad shit Hezbollah got up to, but there is more to the story of Hezbollah than 'just another Iranian backed group to terrorize/agitate Israel' within the context of Lebanon as a country.

This is true. It's a contrast to the people in Syrian territories like Idlib who are celebrating hard

You can grimly respect the militaristic effectiveness of the tactics, despite the civilian cost, and still think it's a war crime or beyond the pale to have engaged in its use at all or again.

Same as you can grimly respect the power of nuclear weapons, but still say that their use is beyond the pale (regardless of MAD).

Irans government and military is an absolute joke, to say the least. Israel could probably do the same to their leadership in about the same time as they have done to Hezbollah if they wanted to. Militant Shiism is dead, all they have is posturing and rockets that get intercepted or fall into swamps. Its time to stop being fucking stupid and giving Israel excuses to continue its imperialism and land grabs with their weak ass 'resistance. Im tired of reading about suburbs and city blocks that have been bombed the fuck out with hundreds of innocents killed because they are too boneheaded to admit they have no chance to take on Israel militarily.
I mean, Iran's strategy has been to be producing weapons for other powers and to just fund and empower proxies. It doesn't give them much when those proxies get smashed.

That they couldn't see Israel would get fed up with Hezbollah bombing northern Israel for about a year all because they thought repelling an invasion in 2006 was proof of some great victory on the horizon is insane.

Yeah, it's really awful they basically decided bombing a residential block was worth it. Not mourning Nasrallah or all the guys with him, but it's hard to deny there was a pretty high cost of life

So they can take out Hezbollah, with accuracy and haste, which is a good thing by the way, I am glad but are we then supposed to believe Israel is not targeting innocent civilians on purpose in Gaza/Palestine and Lebanon?

This just proves if they actually cared about getting rid of Hamas, they could easily do so. It was simply never their goal because then their Military Campaign is over, and Netanyu gets ousted.

It's likely (not certain) that this is a prelude to a ground invasion so that would be the exact opposite of stopping their attacks.

There's also the matter of, if Israel faces no consequences for this (which appears to be the case), they'll just keep going. Cause why not? Why not launch airstrikes at Tehran? Who's gonna stop them?
Yes we're being condescending

I don't think it's the same, honestly. Gaza is a far more densely packed Urban environment and Israel didn't think Hamas was a threat and put all their resources into Hezbollah for a long while.
