Eh, sephiroth is definitely a bit more of an esoteric connection than when shinra were the main villains, but he's still very much in line with the environmentalism/anti capitalist themes.

I feel like in the pushback against alt-right whiners, people overcorrected and make some games sound a lot more political than they are.

There are certainly political themes of environmentalism in FF7, but narratively speaking Shinra is just the archetypal "evil empire" but with a dystopic corpo aesthetic, so the politics feels incidental rather than actually trying to commentate on anything. And pretty much every "political" slant of the story goes away after Sephiroth shows up and the story becomes "chase the dark wizard trying to blow up the world".

The sole exception to this being Barret's backstory, which is pretty a good anti-corporation story that ironically extols the tragedy of technology making coal obsolete. >_>

Persona 5 is a political game. I mean extremely. The plot is about a decent kid who saves a woman from being assaulted only for his life to be ruined due to the assailant being a up and coming politician. And that's just the set up. Most of if not all the palaces and the people who control them deal with serious subjects that many would see as "political."

Shinra is actually a very direct reference to a big Japanese Zaibatsu sort of corporation. The name literally translates to "God Web" or "God Network" , so basically God Corporation, which is the role they basically serve in the story. Japanese love killing gods in fiction, and Jenova (Neo-Jehova) also fits this theme for FFVII

Wutai in this scenario actually represents traditional Japan, and how it was essentially culturally colonized after Japan's capitalist economic boom after WWII.

Again, dieing gods is a Japanese theme,.related to its own recent history, where Buddhism, Shinto, State Shinto all got repressed one after the other, then capitalism also sort of failed to deliver after the "economic miracle" slowed down. Every "false god" they ascribe to fails and gets replaced and you see this motif pop up constantly in Japanese media.

I can agree to an extent, it probably had the weakest last part of the game compared to the other Xenoblades. (Even X, on virtue of it finally having a semblance of story compared to the rest of the game) Still thought it was a pretty good ending though.

It'd be so hilarious if every game developer put a small rainbow flag somewhere in their games so that these people would literally be able to play *nothing* lmfao

FF13 if it released today it would 100000% be thrashed by grifters

Female lead, black lead, bumbling white male lead? They would go ballistic before complaining about gameplay. Hell I'm p sure people did complain about Lightning/ a female lead back then

As i said, Absolute Brain rot, almost all their complaints of woke and politics boil down to "LGBTQ people exist in a manner that isn't for the sexual gratification of men" And " PoC exists in a role that isn't subservient to white male lead"

You can put pride flags in your created stadiums in MLB The Show.

Maybe those JRPGs villains were on to something about humanity being trash.
Am I allowed shit on a certain movement that dealt with gamers in a gatey sort of way?

Because I was arguing with someone very vocally passionately in favor of the movement, and I asked him to give me proof that it wasn't just "anti-woke" garbage (using different terms because that term was used differently back then).

He linked to me a website that was exactly like those lists. Just a nauseatingly long list of game journalist to black list for speaking positively about LGBTQ+ and other progressive ideas.

All he did was convince me I was right.

Journalistic integrity movement my ass.

So Buck Up And Drive actually kind of did this.
The game had various LGBTQ+ flags on billboards. Some people lost their shit, so the dev announced a toggle switch would be eventually patched in.

What they didn't say was that the toggle switch only increased their frequency, there was no way to remove them outside mods.

FF7 villains are literal Captain Planet villains. Rufus is Looten Plunder. Scarlet is Dr. Blight without the deformity. Heiddegar is Duke Nukem. Palmer is Leadsuit. Hojo is Verminous Skumm. And Sephiroth is Zarm.

what i wanna know is was shinra a power company first, or a military, or a... country? is it a country, or is midgar the only thing they rule over politically?

i know its called the shinra electric company... but wtf, what's the timeline on it, is that ever explained? and how were people okay with it like, "alright, i guess our power company is now our military... and also our government"
or was there like a point where shinra overthrew the last government/army of midgar? was that when they put up the plates?
?
