ce celebrating censorship. never change
Musk's cesspool is so compromised by his own brand of censorship that this point hardly applies.

Now that I think about it, how will the Brazilian government even know if the VPN usage is linked to Twitter?

Doesn't that, y'know, kinda defeat the entire purpose of a VPN?

Well, if a known brazilian account is still posting on Twitter, then they can take a guess.

It's like not even a stone's throw away from being the same brand of 'I'm being censored' that some former GameFAQs users used to blog about, with about the same amount of bad faith arguments.

A VPN doesnt add nearly as much anonymity as people think. If Im remembering the tech side of things accurately, its presenting a faux location of connection to every website you visit. But your ISP knows youre connecting to a VPN and I think even knows the final access points as tracking data comes in from them.

The last time I looked into this, for maximum anonymity, you basically need to run a windowed TOR through a VPN to avoid the majority of identifying features of your system, browser, and location. But even thats not foolproof, its just good for laypeople.
No matter our origin, we are all one family, we all share one planet, and we all need to feel loved and accepted. We are more alike than different.
Good because twitter is trash

Bad because adult people should have the right to well use shitty websites if they want to

To build off what you're saying: Musk and his platform are pretty OK actually with complying with government requests...provided they're silencing political opponents of authoritarians like Modi and Erdogan who are all too happy to churn those lithium mining contracts and exercise a bit of quid pro quo.

But when the national law is enacted against opponents who otherwise wouldn't play as nice with him or his financial backers, such as Silva's government, suddenly he develops 'nuanced' views about how much censorship is too much. He would much rather have a partnership between him and Milei of Argentina. There's rare metals he wants good access to, and Silva doesn't play ball as easily. Y'know, cause of all the illegal mining companies are doing while linked to companies like Starlink.

Just can't imagine anyone who looks at this story and somehow thinks censorship is the only issue lying at its heart, or that anyone criticizing Musk's asinine platform management and cozy relationship to authoritarian regimes is only about censorship.

Your usual VPN should be enough so that your ISP doesn't know who you are communicating with.

But the VPN does. The ISP is only knowing the link you <-> VPN, but the VPN knows the link you <-> target site. It's still an improvement, because the VPN usually doesn't know your personal data as the ISP does.

ToR avoids that by using at least 3 VPNs in series, so any attacker would need at least 2 of them to allow any guess of your behavior.

Normal Internet access:
You + ISP <-> Target.

VPN:
You + ISP <-> VPN <-> Target

Tor
You + ISP <-> Node1 <-> Node2 <-> Node3 <-> Target.

The important thing is that every node (and the ISP) knows only the direct neighbours, not the full chain.

Also, the big important thing about VPN is (most of the times) that the target doesn't know your IP.

It's also important to know that people can still just count 1+1 together.

If the police already suspects you of having done some criminal stuff, and the data shows that you were using SneakyVPN the same time something illegal was done from the same SneakyVPN server, they got you.
Just a reminder to anyone thinking Elon is doing the right thing or standing up to censorship or big government

Twitters rate of capitulating to government requests has increased under his watch

and he also straight out has removed posts and blocked accounted at the request of if politicians in Turkey and India during the lead up to elections while defending his actions by saying that its either so this or let the sight be blocked

Elon is more the willing to censor and block speech if the government asking is one he likes

Do you guys who are celebrating this know why this is happening, though? Not the headline of "refusing to name a legal representative," but the actual reason that started the whole chain reaction?

They're not doing so in good faith. They're okay with censorship when it's the "right' kind of censorship

The true fun are the interest he has to pay... Well, Twitter has to pay. He wont pay a single cent from his own pocket.

But his ego and investors wont allow Twitter to fail so fast, so it will probably go on quite some time.

The more people stop using Twitter, the more likely it is that other people will migrate to a different platform as well

If only there was a place as good as twitter. Twitter is still better than pretty much every alternative even after musk.
Can you guys stop posting twitter links? I can't see them from Brazil.
Just post the screenshots so we can laugh at Musk
Billionaires can write off their investment losses on their taxes, but we can't write off student loan debt for the college degrees required to work at their companies.

Voting for the bill that outlawed declaring bankruptcy on college debt is one of the top 5 reasons I always hated Biden. Glad there's a new candidate.
Fining people for using a VPN to access the site is a bullshit move, but banning Twitter is based.

People should stop posting links alone anyway. The embedding doesn't work for several browsers and many people don't want to give sites views. Should be common courtesy to post text.
