Some of the best in the series too.
They had sequels for those already cooking after 7
You gonna do something or just stand there and bleed?
Tactics too. And Vagrant Story.
lolAmerica
Unfortunately that's what happens as the hardware gets more sophisticated, development time increases too.

PS1 Squaresoft had insane output

I wish they could have like a low budget department making smaller more indie style games, it feels like they were at their absolute best when they had limitations on what they could make
The Legend is True!
another casualty of the ever-increasing push for graphical fidelity: The 30 billion polygon mocapped in-engine cutscene? Yeah that little stunt is going to cost you 5 years dev time and all the budget

It was also possible because they had a bunch of things they didn't need to worry about.
1 - Since the game had a static camera angle they only had to draw art from one perspective instead of worrying what the back of a building looks like. Which saves time
2 - World maps could be generic instead of having fully fleshed out forests
3 - They could take the system of 1 game and shove it into another, as its already done. They just make a couple of adjustments to make the game unique.

Not to mention that Uematsu was a genius and could pump out music extremely fast.

Seriously this. The 90s Final Fantasy stuff alone was kind of mind boggling on its own but when you take into account all the other stuff Squaresoft was doing too and how good that stuff was its borderline unbelievable even though we know it happened.

Look I love modern gaming but for me dev time wise gaming was at its peak ps1/ps2 era where you could have this type of output. Ill take this all day long over waiting 5 years for a title even if that title happens to be great its still not worth the wait.

Due to the way development is now we will never see another 90s Squaresoft or early 2000s Rockstar.

I imagine they do have teams for lower budget games like Octopath Traveler and the Mana games. They just don't bother with those titles very often these days.
Currently playing: HonkaiStarRail, ZZZ, WuWa
RIP DFFOO ;_;
I already made one comment about Squaresoft output back then but seriously the topic title as impressive as it is doesnt even take into account in this same time frame they also released

Final Fantasy Tactics
SaGa Frontier both 1 and 2
Einhnder
Xenogears
Parasite Eve 1 and 2
Brave Fencer Musashi
Legend of Mana
Chrono Cross
Vagrant Story

A smattering of other games plus they were publishing some great games they didnt develop like Bushido Blade.

Its crazy what they were doing overall. Multiple teams kicking ass. Some of these games were like Team 4 and they were still awesome.

They had Tokyo RPG Factory for a while, but I just looked into it and they got disbanded at the start of the year (and no games from the team since 2019). They might have some other branches like that though, idk.

They tried making lower budget games a few years back with I am Setsuna and a few others. No one bought them. Octopath Traveler was the only one anyone remembers. Then they tried again when they released new Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile. No one played those either
I don't believe in belts. There should be no ranking system for toughness.

Which is a shame because I liked I am Setsuna and Lost Sphear more than any mainline Final Fantasy game in many years. I bought them.

Tokyo RPG Factory was still profitable. Those were the types of games I grew up on and loved.

This was before the innovation of spamming micro transactions at already existing games with an established base.

Which is a lot more profitable and less risk than making a new good game. Especially with the graphic dev time.

Oh yeah dang... Were any of those good? I don't remember hearing any buzz from any of them

The 13 Games are different though. 13 and 13-2 Reused a ton of assets/locations and made very small changes to the already existing battle system. 13-3 reused most monsters, most major character models and had a much smaller map due to its replayability. They got released over 4 years to recoup the cost of the game engine they made.
Final Fantasy I through VI came out between 1987 and 1994; six games across seven years.

gamers want a game to have a two week development time, have zero crunch, contain no bugs, cost nothing, push industry hardware, have thousands of hours of content but no filler, run at 120 fps and have no micro transactions.

FF VII Remake will take 3 different console generations to be completed and will sell less with each installment. Itll be lucky for all 3 games to outsell the original FF VII and cost many hundreds of millions of dollars to make by the end of it. Ill take 90s Square half ass output and quality any day.
