You walk out of your local store with your groceries and are looking at your phone when someone sneaks by and snatches a loaf of bread from your shopping.

He's not every stealthy about it though and you catch him immediately. He makes a few quick steps as if he's about to run but then stops when it's clear that you saw him. He turns around and goes "I'm sorry sir, my children are starving. I was desperate." with your bread in his arms.

He's clearly homeless.

When I worked fast food, I would hook up the homeless people who slept in the concrete walled area near our dumpster. I got a 50% discount so could give them food at little cost.

So no, I wouldnt stop him. Id give him some more if I saw it handy.

If he is truly homeless I give him the bread and more.

Unfortunately Im extremely skeptical of handouts over a lifetime of so many of them being professional beggars and flat out scam artists. Too many times I offer food or supplies and they turn it down.

The last time I softened my stance on someone begging on a corner with a gas can I offered to buy them lunch and fill their gas can and they refused. They only wanted cash. So I just left and didnt give them anything.

So on the assumption they are legit? Ill be very giving. Otherwise fuck them.

Yeah, screw that. One of the local fast food chains actually starts offering deals, like 80% off on the stuff they would throw out, leading up to closing. Thats such a likable business practice.

In general, Ive always found it easy to give the small stuff, like a hand, a ride, some food or a drink. I dont know if its because I still remember how to do without or what. But its one of the traits I actually like about myself.

I tell him I'm poor too and there's a food bank in town for the homeless.

I'm not giving chase over a load of bread. So lucky him I guess. But also, I live in a big city, so I never stare at my phone while I'm leaving a store. Being unaware of your surroundings in the parking lot is how you get robbed.

Tell him to give me the bread back and we go back inside with a cart and get him some actual food. Not just bread but cold cuts and cheese. Some peanut butter too. Hell, that stuff won't go bad so he could at least eat for a little. Maybe gallons of water and a bottle with some drink mix for flavor.

People who really would call the cops or get pissed off really don't know how it feels on the other side of it. He's hungry and probably embarrassed and ashamed but sometimes hunger makes it impossible to have great judgment.
