seems that most people dont go too far for vacations and that Hawaii is a pipe dream for most people in normal salaries

Yes.

Think about it, if most Americans don't even have 1k in savings, how can they afford a big vacation?
lolAmerica
Plane tickets and resort hotel stays are hella expensive. A plane trip to Hawaii from the US mainland takes anywhere from 5 to 13 hours.
On top of many Americans not having much savings, geography means that most destinations are far away. Canada and Mexico aren't too bad if you're on the respective border, most of America is too samey to justify a vacation if you're already there imo and everywhere else requires expensive flights. Compare that to Europe, where I can get super cheap flights to pretty much anywhere else in Europe and see something truly unique from where I come from.

Also the USA is literally the only developed country that doesn't guarantee holidays...

Wait....what? "Guarantee holidays" as in no paid leave? Or no paid leave on national holidays? Either is really weird tbh. Here you're guaranteed 20 days along with the multiple national holidays and then there's all the added leave depending on what job you do and how long you've been there.

Some companies give out vacation time, but don't allow you to really take a lot at a time.

At my previous job, leave would gwt denied all the time. I typically took a total of seven days off a year and had to cash out the rest. It sucked.
Now I've got a government job and I almost feel like I'm abusing the freedom to take off whenever the fuck I want.

It depends on the state. There is no federal law requiring paid leave of any kind whatsoever (not even sick or pregnancy leave!), but blue states tend to have such laws.

The former. There is no federally mandated annual leave, it is entirely up to the employer. According to Google, 12 states + DC do grant a little bit of leave, but it caps out at about a week.

Not most of then.

I currently get 40 hours a year of PTO, and that is in the top 5% in my industry.
Ouch. When I started working 20+ years ago, I got 10 days off.

My husband recently started his dream job. He earns 1 hour of PTO for every 8 hours worked. So he gets ridiculous amounts of time off.

That's....not much. Kinda happy I live in Australia. 160 hours of PTO a year which accrues if I dont use it, 80 hours of sick leave per year with a medical certificate which accrues if I dont use it, 40 hours of sick leave WITHOUT a medical certificate per year which doesn't accrue, then after 10 years we have access to long service leave which is 12 weeks and is separate to standard PTO. My current job offers our long service at half pay if we want, meaning 6 months off but obviously at a reduced income. Throw in the 4 weeks of PTO for that year which I think can be taken at half pay too and it's 8 months off. Plenty of time for a nice holiday ;)

You dont need citizenship somewhere else in order to leave. Ill never be applying for citizenship where I am.
Asia and South America can be cheaper than vacation in the US. You won't find many hotels here for $20 a night, even roach infested notells. Food, transportation, and entertainment is also way cheaper. The plane ticket is by far the biggest expense.

Most Americans seem afraid to leave the country though.

How it works can vary dramatically depending on where youre thinking of going.
Its not that hard or expansive for most people frankly.

There are plenty of cheap and amazing places to travel domestically, just that most of them are non English speaking places for the most part.

The biggest hurdle is usually time. Since most Americans dont get very much PTO.

I feel really lucky to have 25 days of PTO that I can use when I what.

So I easily have time for big vacations, but having the money is a stretch. We can afford smaller ones okay, but stuff like going to Europe requires years of saving and hoping no major unexpected expenses come up. What is crazy is that google claims we are an upper class household, but I don't think that takes my child support into account, but that would still place us as upper middle. Still hard to get by sometimes with how expensive it is to have a good home and a good car to fit all the kids, rising food costs,, etc.

Also many Americans are afraid to go anywhere else that isnt Japan or safe touristy places. Like white people mexico or white people brazil.

I went on 7 day trip to LA earlier this year

But yeah it ate up most my vacation

Granted I also get 3 paid personal and 4 unpaid sick days

But yeah accumulating vacation and trying to get approved time off is a pain in the ass
