College is gambling

So is more or less any sort of investment, whether thats time or money or whatever. I dont think anybody seriously tries to claim that going to college guarantees you a good job or happiness or anything else.
Youll probably get a higher paid compared to someone straight out of college, but you sacrifice your body for it.

The unfortunate truth is that life (under capitalism) is gambling. You use money to make money, even if you never had that money originally through loans.

Pay that extra money at an expensive school for the extra connections and brand recognition of the school, even if what you learn is about the same as a state school. If you can earn even 30-40K more than you would've otherwise, that eventually pays off.

There is no, I made an arrest 15 minutes before shift and I'm gonna stay and take him and get paid. You take him or ask for next shift to take him for example. If you're late, you usually leave early or come in late the next day

That's good that you're not allowed to milk OT like that. Nice to hear there's a department out there that doesn't have an incentivizing policy like that.

If you're a tourist town, do you have quotas and a policy (written or whispered) about flagging out-of-staters because they're more likely to just pay instead of showing up for a summons, guaranteeing more revenue for the community? There's a little town (I think they're technically a "village") near me where there's a lake and a lot of AirBnB or VRBO cabins, and there's not a season where the cops aren't tagging people from out of town and we just watch the usual townies do fucking whatever and get away with it...

I was going to say exactly the same thing. Hell the college here teaches all those professions as part of their trade division. There really is no difference outside less on paper training and more hands on training.

We don't have quotas. I also don't work in the tourist corridors only for OT. And our mission is always, get these tourists away from me. It's just nonstop hounding by drunk women. And a lot of drunk dudes being jerks. We don't go to court for tickets either

What's that meme, he gets it but is a little confused or something?

I dropped out of school post-GCSEs but got an apprenticeship. I did end up getting my degree (although mainly because my parents, boss, mentor and friends said I should do so) - but it was free.

I live a comfortable life now, and whilst I know I'm lucky, I still advocate that apprenticeships are fabulous career options. Pre-Covid I used to go back to my old school to give a lecture about my path too. Unsurprisingly parking whatever I was driving at the time (a TVR, a Porsche, an Aston Martin etc) tended to draw attention from the students. The first talk I did was to 5-6 kids, the last one I did was to about 120.

As said, I do advocate for apprenticeships but they aren't for everybody. However for those who are unsure of where they want to go in life, I'd like to show the benefits of apprenticeships so that the kids have some alternative options that schools don't tend to emphasise much.

I've had a few students ask to come and visit me for a day and I've shown them what an apprenticeship does. I remember having lunch with a student sat in the cockpit of a 787, because why the fuck not?

She wasn't 100% on aerospace but emailed me a few months later proudly saying she'd been accepted for a Jaguar-Land Rover apprenticeship. I remember messaging a mate who worked at JLR and he said he'd send any aerospace folks my way too.

No, I'm not that one.

There was a South Park episode that depicted plumbers and other tradesmen making lots of money via charging whatever they want for services because most people who went into tech- or business-related careers didn't know how to fix anything.

I know it's satire, but I can't help thinking this is probably more realistic than not, meaning trade work is going to become MORE essential as technology, A.I. in particular, makes more jobs obsolete or less human-dependent.

Are trade schools affordable?
Is financial aid available?
Is internship guaranteed upon graduation?
Do trade schools assist in job search?

Maybe trade schools really should broaden efforts to entice young, high school and college aged people to enroll as an alternative to college, and learn a skill that will always be in demand, offer a sense of personal accomplishment, and pay a livable wage and great potential for entrepreneurship.

I teach at a university and am happy to say that not everyone should go to college. But this anti-college movement that seems to think NO ONE needs to go to college is just asinine.

Im a teacher and I feel comfortable saying that college is mostly a scam from the financial end. Education is always good, but the institution is made for gatekeeping.

Why cant you just apprentice and learn the by doing, rather than by lectures or books? I see so many people who cram and cram and cant do anything practical with any of it.

That pic is in bad faith though so whatever

What people fail to mention, are how white collar jobs are over hyped, while blue collar jobs are looked down upon by society. Change that perspective, and more people would attend trade schools.

There are definitely some white collar workers who assume that they are more intelligent than anybody who is a blue collar worker. The irony, of course, is that its the stupid white collar workers who think that.

Well, if you have a degree, surely it makes sense to go for jobs that require degrees, rather than ones that dont? It would seem that solves that issue.

Have been and so has my fianc. Neither of us can get jobs with our degrees. He has a job that pays well enough but it wasn't because of his degree. One he spent 4 years working on. He's tried to get a job that requires his degree but either gets and interview but no call back or no interviews or calls at all. Same goes for me but I only recently got mine.

True though mostly because the white collar industry has become oversaturated and Many of their jobs are either worthless or non essential. Which is a good combination during a bad economy.

Blue collar work though is generally not the case. On top of which the income gap between the two have shortened in recent recent though Im not sure if its Because they become more valuable due to scarcity or if white collar jobs have started to pay less due to over-saturation.

Where I am the kids have the option to go to a technical high school vs the regular high school if they are thinking of the trades. There were a decent amount that choose the route from my daughters freshman class.

My son starts tech school this upcoming school year for HVAC training.

Goes there the first 5 periods of school, and then the last 4 he takes his regular core classes.

My nephew did the same for carpentry, and now works for a Lowes subcontractor installing windows. Kid is 18 and almost makes more than I do despite me being in my field for close to 27 years.

This is the major thing that people need to consider for sure. And its the main reason why I havent looked into it. I wasted a good almost 15 years doing manual labor (unfortunately it was the dumb retail kind, rather than something actually paid well) and definitely paid for it, so going into more labor-intensive work isnt an option for me.

There's a difference between canon and not-stupid.
This is true if you don't mind doing manual labor. Those jobs listed can be difficult physically and sometimes straight up nasty. You need to be tough and not afraid to get your hands dirty.

If you want a cushy office job in a temperature controlled environment making a good salary, you'll need that paper more often than not. The days of working your way up from the bottom without a degree are ending fast as more companies make it mandatory.

Then you need something to set you apart from the pack. Youve got to remember that having a degree is all well and good, but a lot of other candidates have them. What have you got going for you that other candidates probably dont? And if you cant answer that question, you need to do something to distinguish yourself.
