What do you think of them?

Eh, pretty dumb, but whatever. They clearly don't have a sensible frame of reference to equate owning a pet to being a parent, and I've had pets for over twenty years longer than I've had kids.
Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

Can't say I'm innocent, but there are some similarities to note:
1. Like when a cat is meowing just for attention.

2. Even when you are right to say not let them outside in the moment, you're still wrong and they're right.

While there are some cases that may not be consodered ethical, that doesn't go for every situation. Or even a majority of them.

Cool?

why would it bother me

Don't care.

Both take time and money to look after and if you treat either of them like shit, I'm gonna having negative opinions of you.

My only beef with both parents and fur baby parents is when they make that their entire personality.

Good for you. I don't need to see all your pics/vids when we hang out. Be present, otherwise stay home with your dependant and stop ruining my night out.

I say it jokingly, since I don't see myself ever having kids. Maybe the desire or circumstances will change one day, but as it is now, my dog is my baby. And no, I do not think it is the same as having an actual kid.
I don't say it about my cats, but I don't feel one way or the other about those that do.

But toddlers grow up and you no longer have to pick up their shit. Dogs - you pick up their shit for the rest of their lives.

Kinda cringe but it is harmless so w/e. I love my cats but I'd never refer to them as my children.

This.

Some people are better off just having pets than having kids, and there's nothing wrong with that. If its not affecting your life, why should it bother you?

yeah I initially meant, how happy are domesticated dogs and cats really, I dont think an animal that lives in an apartment is living life to the fullest.

and if you cant meet me there, fine, can you at least concede pug faced abominations that can barely breathe, its unethical to be breeding them
my cat is my child, sorry
I could see you, but I couldn't hear you You were holding your hat in the breeze Turning away from me In this moment you were stolen...
I get that they're not literally the same. I'm also still gonna do it when it's not a serious context.

My wife and I do not want kids, but we treat our animals and love them as if they are our kids. Regular checkups with the vet, medicine as needed, etc.

In this economy who would even want human kids? My new landlord told us upfront that shes fine with pets but anti-kids. And shes in her 70s. Says a lot about how more destructive kids can be versus a Labrador, two cats, and a rabbit.

Ive raised each of our animals since they were babies. Im sorry if your kid is an expensive pain in the ass, but it doesnt invalidate pet owner experiences.

This. Some people acted like I was crazy for saying that. But having a dog or a cat really is like having a permanent toddler. They've been found to have around the same level of intelligence as human toddlers and are entirely dependent on you, but unable to clearly communicate with words

Any person who equates a child with an animal is not right in the head.

It really depends on how they say it and how often they bring it up. It could definitely be a bit awkward on the extreme side of things.

As someone who had a Lab for 13 years and whose worst day - without one moment of doubt - was putting him down when he was too sick to stay alive, they're not on the same level. Just trust me. You don't have kids, you don't have that frame of reference that you absolutely need.

What exactly are you trying to dig out here? People are capable of caring for all kinds of living beings.

I would say those that can't comprehend that are living a sheltered life.

I mean, America is a capitalist hellhole where there is no social safety net for anyone. The reality is, if you live in a major urban area and aren't in a very cushy position, you really can't afford kids, which leads to a lot of broken homes and misery. I think extraordinary people can make poverty work with large families, but most people don't have the mental bandwidth for it. Like, if you are working two jobs just to survive, you have fuck all time for your kids no matter how you feel about them.

Pets aren't really like children because they don't take up the same mental bandwidth or cost as much, but emotionally they fill the same role.

I mean, I've been to Croatia before. If I had to chose where to live, I'd pick Croatia over America. Its a really idyllic place, at least the areas of it I visited like Dubrovnik.
