tl;dr the ultra-conservative evangelicals want Trump to promise a TOTAL abortion ban at the RNC convention. Trump's team knows this is political suicide, so now the Trump base is in-fighting.

Overturning Roe was the worst thing to happen to the GOP. For decades they ran on the promise of overturning it, and always got the evangelical vote because of it. Now that Roe is overturned, the GOP base is split about how extreme they want to go with it.

Already some chatter Trump is "supposedly" trying to distance himself from project 2025. Imagine if this all backfires on them horribly as it should.

The Heritage Foundation et al see Trump as the Trojan Horse to get their christo-fascist agenda into the White House. They don't give two shits about Trump the man

And there's no "supposedly" about it. He straight up lied and said he had never heard of Project 2025 on Truth yesterday

That is a supposedly. He lied. Now question is his intent on that. Is he really trying to distance from it or just pretend like he is. That is tell the public he won't do project 2025 but behind closed doors make deals.

Is it really a question, though? He's absolutely not actually distancing.

It's doubly funny because Trump doesn't give two shits about them. He just wants to stay out of jail.

Thankfully they're dying out at an extremely fast rate. And I didn't mean literal deaths though that's definitely contributing. People are becoming atheist with increasing frequency and many others still are leaving extreme evangelical churches for a more modern / accepting Christianity.

Did you see the same PBS documentary I did? Or read the 2024 Pew study. Religious "nones" now comprise 28% of the US adult population. A larger group than Catholics and evangelical protestants. This number is growing rapidly. I imagine it's due in large part to growing religious intolerance and buffoonery.

Hell yeah. I really hope they manage to get him to say he would support a total ban because his chances drop like a rock if he does.

Which constituency? Half of his base wants a total ban on abortion, and the other half don't. He's now in a position to piss off one side or the other and he can't just "abortions for some, tiny American flags for all!!" his way out of this

"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them."

Barry Goldwater warned the republican party back in the 60's about them he also used maga when running for office lol
Both crazy sides of the anti choice people will bloody each other and kiss Trumps ass. Whichever gives him the better deal for him, is which way he will go.

But it won't stay states rights.

What's funny is if you roll the clock back far enough like the 70's or 80's most religious people didn't care much about abortion it's an issue that was built up over time to be more important.

They act like it's a huge deal now but if you interviewed prominent Christians back then many would express little concern either way.
Getting too damn old for this crap!
Trump is definitely a useful idiot to these guys. No wonder they keep supporting him.

He's bad enough on his own but they know exactly what to do and say to stroke his ego to get their man in so they can push their 2025 crap.

Abortion replaced segregation when the evangelicals realized they lost the battle to "keep black people in their place."

It took them... like five years after Roe? That was when you heard the first evangelical preachers start making digs at abortion.

They had to lick their wounds a whole before they figured out the next single issue for their voters.

Prior to the past couple weeks, I can actually believe Trump here. That he hadn't been told/known about it.

Obviously he hired people associated with the Project but that's easy to do when you're getting all your people handfed to you by people running said Project.

Given how Trump could never shut the fuck up on Twitter, I wouldn't be surprised if they elected to not brief him in any meaningful manner on the Project. If he had bit hook line and sinker on it, he'd have blasted on Twitter endlessly about it and gotten it attention the Project didn't want and rallied people against the idea.

Obviously it's gained more traction than they thought it would in the media and Trump is disassociating with it for one of three reasons:
A) he's been told to
B) he truly is learning about it in full
C) he somehow realizes how bad it looks.

The Project runners know who and how Trump is. They knew the Project wouldn't survive if Trump started tweeting about it. So, like many fascist leaders, you keep the real plans under wraps and let the leader do their own thing.

Yeah but that doesn't let them lord over and feel morally superior to an ambiguous group of people (in this case women who (may want to) get abortion)

There's that great quote from pastor and author David Barnhart on why Evangelicals don't do that:

"The unborn" are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike the incarcerated, addicted, or the chronically poor; they dont resent your condescension or complain that you are not politically correct; unlike widows, they dont ask you to question patriarchy; unlike orphans, they dont need money, education, or childcare; unlike aliens, they dont bring all that racial, cultural, and religious baggage that you dislike; they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn. You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus, but actually dislike people who breathe. Prisoners? Immigrants? The sick? The poor? Widows? Orphans? All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible? They all get thrown under the bus for the unborn.
"It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life."
Yes be as extreme as possible on abortion. It is a winning issue for Democrats.

It was seen as a Catholic issue and most other branches of Christianity didn't care about Catholic issues.
