Doesn't have to be critically disliked, can just be the ugly cousin that everyone tries to forget. Mine would be Unreal Championship 2. The story and plot was straight out of sci-fi action movies like Running Man, with a little space opera. The game play was fresh with it's mobility, triple jumping gunbattles and melee combat. It was also a bit of a hero shooter, with different classes and character abilities. It certainly isn't ever talked about whenever ppl discuss Unreal.

Another example would be Fable 3. It wasn't a bad game just very much a disappointment compared to the previous installments.
Suikoden IV.

Everyone dislikes it compared to the rest of the series, but it's my absolute favorite.

I think Twisted Metal 4 is better than it gets credit for. Granted last time I played it, it felt all wrong but it was just something I popped in while drinking and went in cold. So I couldn't grasp the controls I used to be so good at.

A lot of Playstation 1 games have odd controls but I am getting too off topic.

Not my favorite but I actually think it is a fine game, I hesitate to put it above III. But I could for sure. The small party size blows and sailing sucks but other than I thought it was quite refreshing in ways. I enjoyed it a lot actually.

Its not necessarily a Black Sheep but I love Phantasy Star III the most as I enjoy the 3 generations aspect of that game. Most people always prefer IV.

Honestly, I really liked Zelda 2. It's just unfortunate that there are some serious gameplay issues with the game. I never managed to beat it as a kid, and have yet to return. I'm interested to see how some of the fan fixes workout.

Since it's on my mind due to a playthrough topic around here...

Danganronpa: Ultra Despair Girls. It's completely different from the rest of the series and seems to be pretty widely regarded as a bad and very skippable entry, but I actually like it quite a bit~

Battlefield Bad Company. It's got the only good campaign in the franchise, great humor, introduced (gold) rush, introduced destruction, and was a great translation of Battlefield to consoles.

Then BC2 came out and was just COD so it overshadowed the first game, took out everything that made it good, and became the foundation of the franchise moving forward. I will never not be mad that we never got a proper followup. And it's console exclusive so it's just going to be lost to time.

Dragon Age 2 is often slammed as terrible, but while the corporate meddling rushed the game way too much, I really loved a lot of the character/plot/writing stuff that Bioware used to be famous for.

I'll always put it above Inquisition, even though that won GOTY crap a few years later, but I found it to be bloated with padding and with much worse characters & story.

Neither of them can top Origins though, obviously.
Street Fighter 5 - If it weren't for the OG, I feel like this'd be considered the worst mainline SF but honestly, I prefer it to 4. The V-System provided some extra depth to the game and I thought they had some great newcomers in there, so to see Rashid and Ed in SF6 warms my heart.

Deus Ex: Invisible War - I feel like there's a pattern for Deus Ex where they make a great first game and then the sequel just kinda... happens and it gets shelved for a decade or so. I admittedly never played Mankind Divided but I actually really like Invisible War.

I'm sure there's more but I'd have to think on it

Oh, and I loved Star Ocean Till The End of Time too.

I'm with you. I happily replay Origins and 2 almost yearly. I did one full run of Inquisition, and while I enjoyed it, I am not inclined to play again.

By the time I played it, I didn't see what the problem was. I thought it was about as good as SF4.

And then I looked up videos and articles about how it used to be early on and I was like "oh".

I went into it with fairly low expectations because of what I had heard but, apart from lots of repeating environments, I thought it was great. Characters were great, gameplay was fine, and a smaller scale urban story was a really cool change for a fantasy story.

This is true

If we're talking early SFV, yeah, it wasn't great, but by the time Champion Edition was out, it's night and day

Super Mario Bros 2... but I played it before SMB3 was a thing. So picking up enemies rather than stomping on them was just evolution.

I'm sure if I had played all the others first, I'd say that it isn't a Mario game.
People don't hate on it as much these days, but Mega Man 7.

The sprite work is legendary, the music is great, and the levels are fun to play through. I also like the fact that it's a little darker than your typical Mega Man game (Though not excessively so).

Also like Mega Man and Bass, though understand why people don't like the gba version.

The food here is terrible. My steak was so tough it attacked my coffee and the coffee was too weak to defend itself.
Not sure which game after 2 is considered the black sheep in the Star Ocean franchise but I see a lot of people go after 4/The Last Hope for it's story/dialogue/names, I thought the actual gameplay of it was great though.

I legitimately believe The Last of Us Part II is the GOAT game, far surpassing the original (even though I love it, too), but the discourse around it has been abysmal.

can't wait to see it revived for season two!

Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter.
It really an interesting game, if it was released today it might have been well received because of it's difficulty.

MegaMan X6
I was playing it during my peak reflex so I never found it difficult, except for that junkyard stage. Plus the music is the best of the series.

Dead Rising 4. So bad I refused to even play it and it killed the series which is a shame because I love the games and it has a surprising good lore imo. DR2 is one of my all-time favorite games. Then they let a bunch of people who have no idea what Dead Rising is make a new main-series game and it killed the franchise and the studio.

Streets of rage 3. It inhabits this weird place in which It legitimately does have the best gameplay out of the 3 classic streets of rage games (you got your vertical dodge roll, the ability for all characters to sprint instead of just skate, and special weapon moves depending on the character and weapon), but then its......a little weird. They decided to replace the cool wrestler guy with a cyborg old man (who isn't a bad character, just a weird one lol), give us a playable boxing kangaroo, getting to control shiva even if his movelist isn't quite complete, and then finally letting us play as this joke character trans dude (who's movelist is even more incomplete compared to shiva's) that is definitely offensive and thus was cut out of the localized versions.

Sega decided to crank the difficulty way the hell up for the localied versions and this ruined the experience for a lot of players back then. Whats even worse is that they totally butchered the story and flat out removed cutscenes. Probably the most important thing of all, the music was.......ass. It was experimental according to the creator, but it was experimentally ass.

Nowadays its recommended that if you ever were to play streets of rage 3 just swap it over to the japanese version and for the cutscenes have a translation open to the side.

This. Some people dont like sailing games. I do. Of the 5 main games, 1-5 It's in the middle. I like it over 3 but not over 1 and 2. 5 I wouldn't know. Never got to play it much. I still own it but it slipped out of my backlog. Will never play it really

Now that's suikoden mentioned, 3 is the black sheep that I loved even more than 2.
Yes 2 might be the perfect recipe but 3 has it's unique taste. Every characters feels different with their own innate talent/skills, and you get to use almost all of them due the story has 5+1 scenario. If only they didn't downgrade the battle system, it could've been the best.
