Why?

my brother in law and his gf brought their dog over to my in laws for Memorial Day. Its mostly Rottweiler mixed with something. I know they breed dogs and cats as a side hustle. The dog never leaves my BIL side even though it was her dog before they even met which I thought was weird. Then while eating my mother in law mentions something about the dogs tail being short to which his gf says that she had him de-tailed by putting a rubber band on it so that it would fall off a few days later. She also mentioned that sometimes they just cut it off but that can make a mess. My other bil and his gf told her that was cruel and left the room. They're about to leave the party early.

i looked it up and apparently this is a thing thats banned in most other 1st world countries but still on the books here? If you dont want a dog with a tail then why not just get a different dog.
Pretty much all the dogs you see with no tails had that done.

People like cutting parts off dogs (pets in general) for some reason

I didn't know this was done for non medical reasons.

Declawing cats, which is just as bad, is also legal in most of the US.

I'm sorry that you're acquainted with such monstrously cruel people.

very sadly happened to my dogs - think my ex had it approved cause she liked the corgis that way

one has almost nothing left

thankfully it doesn't seem to have negative lingering effects on them, unlike declawing

but yeah, america doesn't give a shit about most of its people, why would someone expect it to care about pets?

I've never heard of this, what exactly is the purpose? At least with cat declawing I can understand why someone would do it, especially if they don't understand what it actually does to a cat. But why would you want a dog without a tail?

If you think that's bad look up debarking
It says right here in Matthew 16:4 "Jesus doth not need a giant Mecha."

Thats so fucking cruel and gross

agreed. i prefer the natural uncut look of dog tail or cat claw (cat only claw if they don't like person or do something to piss them off).

my grandma's cat was moody, didn't know if i was going to be on her bad or good side. it was attention starved in the later years.

I think some dogs hurt themselves by constantly wagging their tail against walls etc?

They tend to do it as a stylistic choice for the breed these days, in the past it had some minor benefits for hunting dogs.

All those short coat dogs with no tails, boxers, pits, rotts, etc have it done almost as a matter of course, the small little terriers as well.

Breeds that had a history of being bred as working/hunting dogs.

It's mostly an aesthetic thing which, imo, is a gross reason to do it for. Tho my friend's pit had such a strong tail whenever it would get excited he would wag it so hard it would hit a wall and blood would start spurting out the tip. He never got it cut but he did train the dog to wag it's tail less hard. Dunno how he did that but he doesn't bleed from it anymore. I could see someone cutting it for that reason tho.

my deceased dog once was so happy to meet somebody it ended up hurting its own tail for a few weeks. it had the same problem as well but without the blood.

it was in her younger years (age 2 or less).

Besides the gross vanity reasons people have for mangling ears and tails, the argument with some breeds is that their tails are so strong they end up hurting themselves when they wag them. They'll slam them off the wall hard enough to break their tail, or even just wag them so fast that they end up tearing a muscle or something. Which is a thing that happens for sure but its also a behavior you can teach them to stop if they dont learn to avoid it themselves.
