Would you feel comfortable if you had something VERY private stored on it?

WHat do you think about cloud storage in general?
Every big company has been hacked. And they themselves spy on your data.
You don't trust OneDrive?

That is not the question. Do you trust Microsoft? And even if you do, do you think they can actually secure against data breaches for whatever you have.
Bump.
You bumped this one minute after the previous reply? CE isn't that active.

I use it yes, but there's nothing confidential on there. Call me paranoid but don't store anything sensitive on cloud storage. All it takes is one breach.
And all you get in a breach is a late apology and some credit watch lmao
If you allow OneDrive access to parts of your PC's hard drive, then disable that access, does it automatically delete the stuff that you previously had on OneDrive?
Does CE hate OneDrive?
We use it at work and what we use it for is confidential. We don't have to use it but it's convenient cause if I fuck up a report I can reopen it and fix it instead of re writing it but no guarantee I can get to the same computer

It isn't about hating it. Any company will claim they will do their utmost to protect your data. But you have to keep in mind they have a financial incentive to claim this, people make mistakes and the penalty for messing up is small.
No company has went out of business for violating this trust, they just move on.
All the pics I saved on my phone and PC were being automatically uploaded to OneDrive. I checked it one day and there must have been thousands of pics on there.

I've since stopped that from happening. I don't feel anything is really secure and if some shit goes down some fed goons will be looking at all your stuff.
This is where cool people write stuff.
our companies use sharepoint/onedrive to house all company documents.

MS is a data company now. This is how they make their money. They gonna run a.im through all this or sell it to a company to run a.i. through.
They stopped caring about giving a good OS experience and just want data people ignorantly give away for free.
I personally would never trust a cloud service. I understand why people do, and why businesses use them, but as just a random dude I see no value in just adding to the ways I can get my shit stolen.

Businesses can also sue if their confidentiality is breached and win. Regular dude is good luck.
It's great as a roaming profile tool, but it is not a backup solution like so many people treat it. MS should rename it to OneSync or something else so people aren't as confused.

I have all my stuff there. Receipts, tax records, etc.

I have my OneDrive to like triple factor authentication, requiring the Microsoft Authenticator app, text, and password.

Extra sensitive items, like scans of our birth certificates, social security cards, etc., are in a password-protected RAR archive for added security in case someone hacks my OneDrive.
How often does OneDrive update your files? I assume it only updates a file if the file changes?

Why don't you go on one drive and see the date when it last synced?
How often is it MEANT to synch?
Dont use it for anything illegal and youre probably fine. Microsoft would only scan it for viruses and probably against known databases of illegal content. Nobody at Microsoft is opening your OneDrive and digging through pictures of your tax receipts or university assignments

as opposed to other cloud storage, Ive heard Dropbox is better, but I doubt its worth the cost as opposed to OneDrive
It's not if it's secure.

I don't want my photos, info, data, stored on the fucking cloud.

I don't need it there.

It can stay with me. If it disappears, who fucking cares.
The name is wackyteen for a reason. Never doubt.

False. Currently at a big company and I mess with PII data. If I was a bad actor I could mess with people but of course would be fired and go to jail.
But the idea that no one is doing this comes from a place of ignorance meaning literally don't know what is going on.

This, pretty much. If you put data on the Internet, assume it's immediately being collected and sorted or scraped. Whether for marketing analytics, usage statistics, legal liability purposes, or AI training. Or a bunch of other shit I've forgotten.

Depends. You can enable files on demand that means the files stay within the cloud and only download when you open them from the OneDrive client on your machine.

Once they are downloaded they update pretty much immediately whenever there is a change to the file that isnt synced.

MS invest approx 1 billion USD per year in their security. It effectively makes them the biggest security company out there. The biggest thing anyone can do to increase their security with M365 is to make sure MFA is enabled.

I dont think any system is 100% foolproof but I would say the risks of keeping in M365 is a lot lower than most mom and pop companies Ive done IT audits for have for keeping things in premise. A lot dont even have reliable backups!

Is it possible to just completely switch off OneDrive, if it's on your PC, or not?

Depends. If its a business account you can disable that functionality. For consumer stuff no idea.

If you delink your OneDrive from your PC, does it delete all the files that you put in the cloud?
No. As long as they have sync'd.

You have to go through and delete them all manually? Wtf?

You can't say that unless you know how their system works. I'm not talking about microsoft specifically but several cloud storage/password managers use end to end encryption on the data so it's impossible for the company to read your data. If they get hacked, the hackers couldn't do anything with your encrypted data unless they tricked you into giving them your credentials to unencrypt the data.

Also any time a big company gets hacked, you need to read into what got hacked exactly. A hack doesn't always mean someone got access to all the servers and customer data. Sometimes the hack exposes employee data or just some customer data like names and email addresses.

This is CE, not google. You could easily answer all these questions yourself with a bit of legwork.

Tc what exactly do you have in that file!?!?
Do OneDrive and your PC synch up even when the PC is off?
Bump.
tc, just put your "stuff" in an external hard drive just to be safe. these guys randomly check these and if they ever stumbled on your drive... well, you better leave the country fast.
Hello?
Microsoft Cloud Storage
ehhh, I'm fine with just storing my files in encrypted .7z files on external HDDs

I trust it as much as I'd trust any of the other major ones. I use it rather than the others because it has very nice integration with Windows.

This isn't discussion though, this is simple ask question and let people respond for me so I don't have to lookup the information I seek. Its just lazy. Its not even conversational.
