Maybe it's because I've only gotten into Lego recently, but I don't really see the point in the minifigs. I just want to build cool stuff.

Thats also true, but just one rare minifig can go for $7k. Idk of any modern sets that go for that much.

The prices are high because of the very unique and detailed manufacturing process and how dedicated they are to quality control. Im not saying they arent expensive, but theres a reason for it. Any complaints a customer has with a set they buy, like a missing piece or sticker sheet, are very quickly addressed by LEGO.

Thats a bit reductionist. Legos manufacturing process is really down to a science. Its very much not just holes and pegs. I recommend watching their documentary that explores it all.

some people collect only the minifigs and run them all up and down their walls

as such they NEED to complete the collection and will pay any price

there is enough of these people such that they compete for the few available minifigs making the price high
