A great spotlight on how bad the Twitter blue check system is from Katy Perry.

So, Katy Perry is referencing the fact that fake AI photos of her at the Met Gala fashion show are fooling people on the internet, including apparently even her own mom. "Hold on to your common sense hat this fall" pretty clearly refers to how fake photos are gonna get used more and more in election season.

But check the comments, and it's all either bots or perhaps very dumb people, all rocking the blue checkmark since Twitter boosts those to the top of replies. Without the context, they have all parsed the tweet as being about Katy Perry's next fashion appearance or something.

Yeah, I never go to the For You section or follow/engage with hardly any blue checkmark accounts. My experience with Twitter is fine, but the blue checkmark system is still a disaster for the site.

I hate sounding like an ass but AI generated content is still pretty easy to spot and the only people who seem to have issues with it are people with no existing media literacy to begin with

Hopped off Twitter like six months ago. Couldn't endure any longer.

So a few weeks ago, on 4/20, when everyone online was celebrating / memeing about it for obvious reasons (which I'm not sure I can name here) I remember seeing someone who made a tweet that was like

Don't forget, today is also hitler's birthday! happy 4/20 everyone!

and their replies were just full of blue checkmarks with nearly identical canned responses along the lines of

Sorry, but I am not allowed to celebrate hitler's birthday since that goes against my ethics policies
