Valve has proved time and time again that if a publisher acts in anti-consumer ways, Steam will issue refunds.
This is probably why so many companies want to avoid Steam minus the fees. They don't like that they have to act correctly.
Yeah, Steam is (usually) pretty good for consumers. I never got why jelly nerds hated on Gaben for having a fleet of yachts when that article came out. Dude definitely earned it >_>

I thought topic was going to be about a company making games. Not a company that owns a site where you can buy games. Of course they will be pro-customer to keep you coming to their store/site.

I love Valve but I still remember when they tried to implement a framework for paid skyrim mods.

Valve let the success of Steam go to its head, and we're still waiting for the next proper Half Life game. The shit they pulled with Artifact and Steam Machines showed that it's out of touch.

I read an article recently about how Valve had the highest revenue-to-employee ratio of any company in at least the tech industry, it was kinda crazy. Steam just prints money

I feel like they need to make some games to be considered the best gaming company.

They are the most consumer friendly video game marketplace

Yea, and they could have milked the fuck out of their franchises but chose not to. Who else does that?

They also single handedly saved VR when it was in its infancy. Now granted VR is kinda fucked now but thats mostly Metas fault.

easily one of the worst and by far the worst as far as PC gaming goes, Steam ruined good PC gaming and made it go all digital, and all their games are boring and poorly made, I have nothing good to say about this terrible company

Isn't there a ton of Half Life side games and they're on their 4th version of Counter Strike?

maybe not the best, but I def think they're up there.

at least on the dev side of things, the 30% cut steam takes from each sale feels kinda steep. I think it goes down as sales go up, but only a small percentage of games ever make over 5k in revenue.

PC was always digital though. Even when you had an installer on a disk you needed a key or connect to a server to verify.

me sitting here with hundreds of physical copies of games that have 100% of what's required to play on the disc because they came out before 2004 when Steam killed PC gaming for good:

Yes and no.

When it comes to Steam as a storefront and content delivery platform they listen intently and act fast, especially when they make unpopular decisions, making it the powerhouse it is today.
When it comes to hardware, they're slow and experimental but make fantastic products.

When it comes to handling their community, they have a hands off approach that results in largely useless one sentence reviews trying to be funny, self-proclaimed alt-right fascists, and individual game forums that might as well not even be there.
When it comes to games, they infamously left their claim to fame on a cliffhanger and it's not an exaggeration to say that, while the games themselves are high quality, their monetization model is straight up gambling.

If it wasn't for Steam they'd have long been considered one of the worst in the biz.

Bees
eh idk how to measure best

and u have devs, publishers, manufacturers, storefronts, etc

from a purely dev POV i am very impressed with fromsoftware's track record. bandai namco has done some annoying shit tho thats for sure

but FS is the only studio I can think of that put out a perfect game, then dumped an amazing free update into it on top of it
My fate was the grandest, most brilliant of them all.

Absolutely, they're the ones who look after their customers the most. Gabe's line on piracy is inspiring, treat your customers with respect and they'll show up. Not even epic nor the big 3 are as pro customer as steam is
