You can say no. Its expected due to the time and monetary commitment. My brother had a destination wedding, and the expectation from him and his wife was If you want to come, wed love to have you, but please dont see that as an obligation, or that we will be let down if you cant make it.

You should instead see it as Do I wanna use this wedding as an excuse for a vacation?

Forreal. I don't mind destination weddings. Gives us an excuse to travel somewhere.

Would definitely find my own accommodations not always with hotel they are using.

Couples who plan destination weddings typically expect a very small turnout, but if the host hotel is that expensive, they've gotta be expecting an even smaller one than usual. Unless you're close family or a VERY close friend, they're probably not expecting you to go.

I did use a friend's wedding as an excuse to see Hawaii (Kauai) a decade ago, and it was fucking amazing, but I was able to secure a great studio for like $150 a night. $750 is steep af.

Maui *hotels* are hella expensive always but even more if its not during the off-season. Its a small island though; everything is vaguely close to whatever venue the weddings at.

It would be a over night thing with those prices but considering Hawaii is a 10 hour flight from NY, you'd have to stay a few days because of the time investment
