My great grandmother used to tell me a story when I was a little boy that relates to this.
Back in the old country when she was a little girl in her village there was a baby that the villagers apparently felt was freakishly big and strong. They eventually concluded that the baby was possessed or a demon or something. To remedy the situation, the entire town burst into the parent's home and took the baby. They then proceeded to murder it in front of the parents.
To further this being fucked up, they included children to be part of the mob so they could see this shit. As an old woman, my gradmother still was horrified by it.
So, I guess the point of sharing this is that you should be wary of late 1800s eastern European villages if you value your child's safety. Shit was insane there
