I honestly couldn't tell what this movie was supposed to be about from the trailer. Is it a sports story? An injured athlete redemption story? A love story where Zendaya is a pariah?

I would not call it an inbred athlete redemption story. There are elements of that yes, but that is not really a story ark within the movie.
