I also picked it up recently when it was on sale and played through the campaign just to say I did, basically, before the big updates coming next month.

I'd just pick something you think looks cool and play through with no guide. At least, as far as getting through the campaign, everything seems viable and the game holds your hand a ton anyway.

I may look calm, but in my head, I've just killed you three times.
Uninstall and refund, then play the superior diablo 1
Wait a couple weeks for Season 4 to start. Massive overhall in terms of itemization and inventory and some of the classes too.
Rage is a hell of an anesthetic.

I had a friend who insisted that I was missing out by snoozing on Diablo and kept urging me to buy it. He's real quiet about Diablo now.

Yeah, everything I saw about it up until the news about season 4 looked bad, so I didn't bother, but I caught it on sale right as I saw the news about season 4 - which looks to be fixing nearly every major issue. There's still a chance it'll be lame, but it'll probably be worth playing at that point, at least.

Explore and take your time through the campaign. The endgame isn't worth rushing towards.
You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.

diablo 4 is one of those games where everyone is like "diablo 4 fucking sucks. i should know, i have 2,000 hours played"

personally i thought it was pretty enjoyable, the gameplay is tight and i liked exploring the map and leveling up my character. not into the whole seasonal thing though, kind of feels pointless to keep starting over with new characters just to try the content changes. i probably put in about 100 hours and think it was worth it

It's a solid ARPG for $20.

Most leveling builds are pretty straight forward; pick a skill theme and run with it. Around level 30 you'll start getting a lot of Uniques which you can extract and plop onto other gear as you see fit, ideally grabbing traits which leverage the skills you already use.

Endgame is a bit of joke, but the journey there is a lot of fun. I got to level 100 with my landslide Druid and got my glyphs up to level 15 by running nightmare vaults. Never beat a level >90 nightmare dungeon nor killed Uber Lilith, but I play solo and the amount of farming I'd need to mess with to not get one shot there was just too much lmao. Beat a bunch of 80-89 NMDs and had Duriel on farm (not that he ever dropped good stuff...)

Just know, to me, you're better late than never again.

It's definitely fun enough to be worth $20, easily. There's good class variety, fun builds to try, etc.

It didn't have the longevity of D3 for me, but I got my money's worth even at full price.

People are overdramatic. It's fine for a playthrough, particularly for only $20. It will be getting a big itemization update soon though, so may be a good idea to wait until then to play.
