Something about the small town setting, everyone knowing eachother, the beautiful scenery (or the type of scenery its trying to represent). I love small town kind of games that try to be like Twin Peaks.

you play it for the story and atmosphere. people that like the game agree that the gameplay is terrible. The game was originally going to be a point and click adventure and the RE4 style combat was added in late development in fear that the game wouldn't sell well if it wasn't more action oriented.

Exactly. Like the original Drakengard game. Watch somebody else play it for the story and you dont' have to deal with the terrible gameplay.
The ball is round, the game lasts 90 minutes. That's fact.
Everything else, is theory.
