I'm more than positive the courts will strike this down.

Yeah that's a good point
Some guys have all the luck, Some guys have all the pain
Some guys get all the breaks, Some guys do nothing but complain
This is a VERY slippery slope. I don't like it.

However, I agree that youth will find another solution. I don't see them giving up so easily, and honestly, they shouldn't.

I'm curious why anybody who doesn't use tiktok would think this is bad. I assume people who do use it are under their own illusions and can't be objective. I've heard one good counter-argument ever.

The way this got passed was scummy as hell. It got attached to a Ukrain funding bill at the very last second. There's a chance that a lot of them didn't even know it was there.
Wow, that is dumb.

Gives precedent to pull any social media the government deems a threat to national security?

It seems the Democrats smartened up with this version. The original version had the ban take effect in 6 months after legislation passed if China refused to sell it. It would be right in time before the 2024 election.

It is now scheduled to go in effect 1 year after legislation passes if China refuses to sell it so it would go in effect during 2025. By the 2026 midterms young people would already be addicted to whatever new social media there is and the controversy will be forgotten by then.

Wow. Okay ill try and make this simple. What do you define as an enemy foreign actor? Is that something objective enough that you want it written into law?

You just do whatever the government thinks is best for you with no critical thought?

I hope everyone supporting this understands the precedent this sets.

Another win for the nanny state

And what precedent is that? There's nothing unique about tiktok other than the size of its user base. It's basically vine. The reason it's going to be banned is because it's a national security risk. The exact same reason China doesn't allow American social network companies to operate there.

China is masterful at social engineering. Their government owns the platform. Undermining the US by making a toxic cesspool for the plebs of America to waste away in is a great way to undermine America. Since it's a foreign enemy it's a unique case.

Some similar arguments for getting rid of American social media sites too yes, but those aren't foreign or enemy owned so they need to be dealt with by some other mechanism, and I can't think of one that would preserve the good parts of the internet.

Doubling down on your same argument isn't in any way compelling. China is an enemy of the US, and foreign. The actor part you can look up yourself.

You're not thinking beyond your hatred of China. If the US labels the UK as a dangerous foreign actor would you be in favor of banning anything based there?

That is the precedent that youre okay with. Its way too broad.

There are legit security concerns but this bill is also being pushed by American social media companies since Tik Tok is their biggest competitor.

so what you're saying is it's not actually any different from US owned social media other than it's foreign

In the sense that we should prioritize national security over some dipshit social media app? Sure, we should be like China in that very specific sense.

If we somehow ended up in a war with the UK that would be necessary sure. But we aren't and we likely never will be so your whataboutism is irrelevant here. China is CURRENTLY our enemy. And I don't hate China, they are just our enemy. I think China is a dystopian nightmare, but I've heard a lot of people say it's nice there. The issue really does boil down to TikTok's ownership and nothing more.

This is a good post. You have to be blind if you don't understand that China is in part using TikTok as a tool to influence the world (of course it is also to make money too like most things). There is a reason that Tiktok in China is different than TikTok in the rest of the world.

That said, social media companies in America are also insidious and they are causing massive problems with the population too.

An unfortunate situation where it's the correct decision, but it sets a very bad precedent that will inevitably get exploited down the line.

Banning tiktok isn't going to do great things for Biden's support among zoomers in november, either.

Any potential ban won't happen until next year because of the 1 year clause.

I suppose China could shut down Tik Tok before then, but then they will lose the ability to let the TikTok algorithm influence Americans during election season so I kind of doubt that will happen.

People are buying into the BS that its for national security. Listing all the crap foreign countries are doing despite out country being guilty of the same, even more so actually. The current world events the past year was just the tipping point for them.
