What is it about that? They just look more childish than a handheld that is a single piece.

Except for the 2DS...that might look even more kiddy than a 3DS.

but i guess nobody gave a shit if that is the case, cause the SP sold over 43 million, DS over 150 million, and 3DS over 75 million so

anyone that is going to judge you for playing a handheld in public is not going to be doing so based on whether or not it has hinges, they've already made up their mind.
