unless you arent saying that people just stick it in the register and call it a day

its placed in like a lost and found. no one ever comes back for this money (I agree its a lot of money to misplace for a lot of people but this is true in my case). its placed in the till

never heard of this. must be a regional thing

like thats crazy. your stores just codify stealing. thats audacious. here, you make note of it, store it in a locked drawer for 30 days, then the one who turned it in can claim. literally never heard of your dystopian policy

It's been every job I've worked. My current one will set it aside generally speaking but I don't even think they wait 30 days unless it's a particularly large sum of money.

I'm actually surprised this isn't normal everywhere else. Most people I know, have an understanding that if they lose a small amount of cash, that it's gone. I've lost small bills upwards to $80 because someone turned in my wallet but took the change. Frankly, I was grateful that they were nice enough to return it somewhere.

Nah, $20 can be a lot to some people and someone who lost it in a bathroom or in a store like that might hope that someone would have turned it in to the staff. It's shitty to just pocket it like that.
That person is buying Starbucks?

If you can afford Starbucks you can afford losing $20.

This. Money on the bathroom floor is no dirtier than the money in your wallet.
That's not actually true depending on where the money is found in the bathroom.

A bill sitting in a puddle of piss or worse is not going to be the same as a bill sitting in my wallet.

Yes, bills are a petri dish of germs, but the idea that it's equally disgusting no matter where the dollar is found, is just not true.

wow this topic blew the hell up lmaooo, did not expect this

just saying this situation actually happened to me, i was in a starbucks bathroom, found a 20 dollar bill, and turned it in to the cashier and the $20 actually belonged to the cashier, she lost it when she was cleaning up the bathroom

i just instinctively turned it in but after i left i realized i was the only one in the store so if the cashier realized she lost it then there's a chance she would have suspected that i took it since i was the only one there

Turn it in, but I dont shame anyone that pockets it.
while driving yesterday I saw a banana peel in the road and I instinctively swerved to miss it, thanks a lot Mario Kart.
I have actually had this happen, i ignored it in case the owner came looking for it
No worries no, dilemmas no
3 for 20, baby

Screw my tolerance, I'm going in
I feel well put
At my own job, I turn basically everything in. I know with that money, it almost always just ends up going to my work since it gets deposited after sitting in lost and found after a week.

Anywhere that's not my job is not my responsibility. Also, I live in a rich area. The person who dropped it is probably a teenager who gets money flung at them by their parents all the time and they don't care about it. It's doubtful they'd even notice that they lost it. They're also usually the only ones with cash.

Idk, that seems classist. And even if that were the case, plenty of people buy Starbucks with gift cards, and it's also possible for a worker to have lost it.
Mine was more a joke, but I should have thrown in an avocado toast line as well to make it more clear

i clicked pocket it, but after thinking about it a little bit more, i'd probably leave it. it's not impossible for the person that dropped it to notice and come back to see if it's still there.

if they don't, and someone else pockets it, i'm not going to lose sleep over 20 bucks.
