I don't really go to bars, but I once went to one alone on New Year's a few years ago (around 1-2am), and random people started talking to me.

I feel like, as long as you're open and friendly, there's a good chance.

They can be. You can also meet a lot of deviants. Ive never made a friend at a bar, but I do recall very clearly a man who kept buying me two drinks at a time just for saving his seat at the bar. Once I was incredibly drunk the stranger offered me a ride home and my big burly coworker (we were both ranch hands) stepped in and carried me like a baby to the vehicle all of us took to said bar. He made sure I got to bed safely and I will be forever grateful for his intervention.
He's all alone through the day and night.
