C. Being great at a video game requires the same set of skills and discipline someone needs to be good at a sport (practice, perseverance, will-power, determination, etc). The only difference is that the person playing the video game is using primarily using their mind to complete the task rather than their bodies.

Imo, some gamers are insanely good with their reflexes and understand greatly how to adjust to a situation. I swear with that kinda skillset they could probably do something to better themselves than just gaming.

Sometimes there's an equivalent degree of difficulty/number of people who can do something. But it's closer to being a really good chess or poker player.

Why do athletes "deserve" respect? What are they doing for society, or for me specifically?

Pro gaming competitions are not entertaining

If individual pro gamers want to start a youtube channel or something to entertain others then they can go ahead, hopefully they have some good content under their sleeve
Some guys have all the luck, Some guys have all the pain
Some guys get all the breaks, Some guys do nothing but complain
Both playing games, so yes, although it's not really respect
How quaint.

that depends. they can be if you're into the game.

I thought Heroes of the Storm pro matches were a lot of fun. I watched some OWL too but I thought the commentary and all the waiting between matches was annoying.

SC2 pro matches were cool too even though I'm not good at that game

i've only respected a few super skilled gamers. not as much as people doing dangerous niche sports with prob lower skill pool than gaming but they gotta face the fear of death so there is that

Construction workers are respected? And should an NFL player be as respected as an architect?
How quaint.
Eh, maybe. Half Confirm

I always feel like these type of topics underestimate how much "mind" you need to perform at a high level for an athlete in their respective sport. And how low of a barrier it is to reach the top 1 percent in most competitive video games. (I'm not saying it's easy to be a top level gamer, but what I'm saying is that it's way easier to be "skilled" at video games than it is to be a "skilled" athlete.

I think at some point there's just a numbers game that professional video games doesn't have the same infrastructure to support right now (thought it could in the future).

Like I went to a high school where kids were in football since 6th grade, putting in lots of hours of practice and training. Only a handful of kids during my time there were good enough at football to play in D1 college football. And from there I went to a D1 college with student athletes who were basically full time athletes where only a handful of them even became starters in the NFL. So when you're watching NFL games, you're watching a cut down from a huge group of people who seriously attempted to play football.

Sure lots of people play video games, but how many people seriously train for competitive (fill in the blank with your game of choice)?

yeah, major sports get a ridiculous amount of ad revenue every game. OWL got 10s of millions of dollars from team owners but there just weren't enough people watching for ads besides PC hardware to sell.

i came in to say this, but i also have to admit there is a bit more of a physical/reaction skill involved with shooters. shooting is an olympic sport, right? so...idk. maybe there's an argument there.

If what they provide is simply entertainment, then if anything I "respect" skilled video gamers more than athletes, simply because their area of expertise interests me more.

This sort of thing just comes down to whatever field people derive more entertainment from.

Yes but you have to consider the demand for it. Just because we're entertained more by gaming doesn't mean gaming is more widely entertaining to others.

I'd reverse that, athletes deserve the respect that gamers get.

Yes, but athletes should be getting less respect in the first place. Both take time to hone their craft and thus deserve the same level of respect. It's just that athletes need to come down multiple notches.
Blah, blah, blah, and blah.
Confirm. They both DESERVE zero respect.
