Into The Wild was basically this too, although he wasn't some batshit crazy right winger.McCandless was actually competent though. He lived off the grid for several years siccesfully and did and saw a ton of cool shit. The thing that got him killed was a mistake that even an experienced survivalist could have made. Which is sort of the peril of that lifestyle, there isn't a ton of room for error.
