It certainly doesn't make him innocent, but I do believe a lack of knowledge of the law could have believably lead him to do such a thing in the first place. It's not an argument that he shouldn't face punishment, it's an argument that... Yeah, it's possible he really did just pay the debt and do it in a way he didn't know was illegal.

I don't think anybody is saying he did nothing wrong. The debate appears to be moreso... Did he just pay the interpreter's debt, or was he the one actually gambling? Him being ignorant of the law makes the former credible.

this isn't a serious crime and intent definitely matters. there definitely won't be charges for ohtani unless something else comes out

donald trump is a traitor and tried to overthrow the government, this isn't remotely comparable
