*deviating heavily

Spoilers for the show and book, obviously.

It's been 20+ years since I read the novel, but I remember certain things differently, like the battle that took place during the escape from Osaka taking place on a boat (I vividly remember a female samurai in full armor falling into the ocean and drowning, for instance). And this most recent episode? I do not remember Toranaga's son doing that at all.

Further, I just saw one of the previews and I saw marching armies, which I ALSO do not remember. I know that the novel ended up right before Sekigahara, but it looks like the show is actually going to go into that battle?

For those who have brtter memory of the book, just how much has the show deviated?

It's definitely moving at a much faster pace than the 1980 miniseries.

I was talking more about the novel than the previous miniseries. I haven't seen that one.

I'm only about 100 pages into the book so far but the show has already heavily deviated from the book. Good changes tho imo.

I do remember the original being a bit...cringe in parts.

It's dated that's for sure. The first chapter is pretty much the opposite of the show tho. Like the pirates are basically treated as kings in the book compared to the show. I think the show made proper changes to that bit cuz why tf would you be tossing women and food at these "barbarians" lol bordering on fantastical fetishization.

Still a great book so far. I just see why some of these things wouldn't work with a modern audience even if they worked back in the day.
