The action you're supposed to do changes depending on which stage you're doing, and if you don't immediately stop adding controller input after doing the action then it won't show up. There's also a meter that, if empty, won't allow the particle to appear either.There was also text on the screen telling you what actions you had to stop moving after. So even if you just skipped all the dialogue or forgot, all you had to do was look at the bottom of the screen when you got confused and you could find out in seconds.
