They're making you do the work, some of the systems are sensitive and sometimes you gotta wait for the customer service person to come help you, it doesn't even reduce the prices of groceries with all the saved labor cost aaaand they don't even prevent stealing that much.

Nobody says its a scam. But its pretty clearly a move to reduce the number of employees that a store has without passing savings on to consumers, and pretty objectively for larger number of items its less convenient to scan and bag yourself.
Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

Why would I want someone to go through my stuff in exchange for bagging everything slower and not the way I want it?

the prices aren't reduced even when you are paying for less labor

Without truth, there is nothing.
its manufactured convenience by understaffing real checkout lanes, making you bag your own things at real checkout lanes, and having junior/new/poorly trained (SLOW) employees on real checkout lanes

shopping in the 90s and 00s was a far different experience than today.

I feel like yall just try and find stuff to get worked up over. Its a freaking self checkout. If you dont like it, dont use it. Its that simple.

No wonder youre all so angry and uptight all the time.

I wish. It used to be common for the lanes to be staffed at a grocery store, and even a bagger. Now I'm lucky to see three lanes open with maybe one bagger being shared. Maybe.

Corporations pay less money in labor costs and still raise the prices due to higher wages.

That's the scam.

tbh it would be easy to steal from most of them except Walmart where they have like 3 or 4 people watching you like a hawk. My local Dollar General has 4 at the front and never any employees up there. They don't know what's being scanned.
This is where cool people write stuff.
When they rolled out here 20 years ago we kept getting told how it'd result in lower prices. It doesn't.

Self-checkout is a topic that gets people fired up? When did this happen? What's the controversy?
It is impossible to live in the past, difficult to live in the present, and a waste to live in the future.
(He/Him).
It's only more convenient if the store is dead and you don't have to wait behind a dozen+ people very slowly scanning and bagging their stuff

Yeah, and they always ask "Do you want this in a bag" like it doesn't have it's own handle.

The biggest criticism I've seen is that "you have to do the work."

To which my response is always "I don't care because it's faster."

I don't know why so many people have skill issues with self checkout, but that shit has always worked for me. The only time I deal with an attendant is when I ring up alcohol.

I never use self-checkout because I would never use a place like Walmart.

In the Midwest, we have a chain of grocery stores called Hy-Vee, and the customer experience is so vastly superior to Walmart that I can never imagine going to Walmart again. Hy-Vee has become a pretty big chain, so now they have everything that Walmart would have.

At Hy-Vee they have staff that looks out and opens up new check-out aisles for you so you don't have to wait in a line. So, it's actually faster to use a staffed aisle there. They also have baggers that arrange your cart. Plus, unlike Walmart or Target, Hy-Vee will, in addition to your name brands, carry local brand from businesses in your area so they always have super good salsa/hummus/chips/wine, etc.

They force customers to do the job and if they make a mistake they get handcuffed and accused of stealing

Just part of a trend where costs go up and service goes down

Self checkout doesn't save time in my experience. You have people with millions of items that scan their items at a snails pace, then the machine says you need assistance and you have to wait forever for someone to come over to fix it.

I started going back to regular checkout since it moves faster.

Ppl are afraid of change. Many don't like tapping their credit/debit card lest the dark web is watching them... meanwhile they're texting photos of their kids to 40 of their closest friends.

I think cashiers & self-checkout both are here to stay together. Some companies are getting rid of self-checkout in high theft locales, yet overall it's made shopping more satisfying experience for many, including myself.
I'd say the % of times having to wait in line for a self-checkout machine is maybe 9% of my experiences... & % having to wait in line for a cashier is about 89%. I prefer the former, by miles.
I dunno about anyone else but I always steal at least 1 thing in self checkout now

If you dont understand how its a scam then you yourself have accepted reality as it is and dont mind being taken advantage of.

You are paying the same prices to do the job of a cashier. Pretty simple to understand lol.
