Nah, I think you're over indexing on just how many diehard capeshit bros there are. I enjoy DC and Marvel and I couldn't give two shits about superheroes dying. The game flopped because of it being a shitty live service game with very uninspired repetitive and bare bones gameplay. Comic nerds with their weird para social relationships wish it failed because of the narrative, but honestly it was it simply just being nothing fun to play.
I mean, most of the discourse online was about the story on launch day. Not about the gameplay. The gameplay, by all accounts, is the most praised aspect of the game.
