Because at the time he did it, it was a unique gimmick that a lot of people hadn't heard before. It made him stand out.

But yeah, dude can really sing. Auto-tune wasn't him covering for a lack of talent

There was a whole episode of I think it was This is Pop on Netflix about this, including interviews with T-Pain. Kinda heart breaking, from what I remember, since it kinda made him a joke, but its basically what post 2 said. Glad hes doing good now though, dude is indeed super talented.

I think his big mistake was continuing to use auto-tune after the first big hit. I understand why he did it, but that kinda made it his thing so when it went out of style he went out with it
