Should I even both watching more found footage horror?

I watched The Outwater last week, and despite the movie's flaws, there were a number of things I felt worked right for the movie. So I watched more with Evil Things, Hell House LLC, and Final Prayer, but all of them were mediocre-to-bad.

The only two that I liked are Cloverfield and The Outwater. I didn't like As Above, So Below or The Blair Witch Project (admittedly I was like 9 when I saw it and never saw it since), and the few others I've seen have been worse than As Above, So Below.

I basically only like cloverfield, and the VHS series.

quarantine was alright but nothing super special. Worth it if youre bored.

the only one that stuck with me was the Blair witch
it felt semi believable.
the newer one that came out a couple of years ago was just a terrible follow up to the movie. Like its just bad
I bought the Taito Egret II Mini just to play puchi carat

JeruZalem was pretty decent, I'd recommend it

Same. It's interesting. And has a more unique premise than most found footage. Also it was filmed on Google Glass
Found footage is ok in short bursts. A feature length found footage film is just way too much.

Ever since I found out Blair Witch was fake I hated that shit. Saw it at the movies with my cousin and she said it was actual footage so it was creepy. Knowing stuff like this isn't real just makes it look like low budget crap.
This is where cool people write stuff.
I agree REC is great

The VHS movies (if they count) are hit and miss but they have some creative ideas, I liked some of the segments. And it's not a big commitment since it's short bits put together, you can just bail if you're not enjoying it.

I'm guess you were a kid. Cause I was like in high school I think when that came out and I knew it was fake. There is no way a real recording that had people actually die in it would be allowed to release for profit to the public. It wouldn't even be allowed if it was free to watch

Well I like some of the ones you hate, but maybe try out Underwater House (I think thats what its called)

A really cool and creepy premise with some pretty good scares

Edit: Its actually called The Deep House

The last exorcism was good too

I love The Outwater. This movie seems to be hated by many on the foundfootage subreddit tho lol. they prefer the other movies you've listed that you didn't enjoy

My recommendation are:
Landlocked
The Borderlands / also known as Final Prayer
The Devil's Doorway

These should be free on tubi

Two others that I enjoyed:
Noroi the curse (this was on youtube at one point might still be on there)
Curse of Aurore (amazon prime might have this still. oh it may be on tubi too lol)

Lake Mungo and Poughkeepsie Tapes are also really good. They go all in on the fake documentary thing rather than just being footage that was found and edited together by... someone into a narrative for... some reason.

on another note on the gimmick side of horror... remember those webcam horror movies?

for all of their tries it was literally a drama/mystery movie that ended up most successful xd

The Outwaters was great. Sound design drove the latter part of the movie. Very unique. If you liked that, Skinnamarink is a good one. Otherwise Grave Encounters is more traditional, but it has some of the best scares, imo. It's actually free with ads on youtube

Afflicted (2014) is my favorite found footage movie.

I don't want to spoil what it's about.

I remember watching a movie like that. Looking it up, I think it was Rec.
Like most sub genres of horror, the quality can vary wildly. I don't mind found footage horror at all. I think a big thing is how good the camera work is. I hated Blair witch because the camera work was so shaky.
I personally thought the hell house movies were decent. I also never go in expecting greatness when watching these types of movies either. Gotta keep those expectations low.

oh shit i forgot about Troll Hunter. That might still be on amazon prime video

Watch Skinamarink. Not "found footage" per se, but definitely nails the vibe. That movie stayed with me, (although I advise people to avoid it if children in peril triggers you).

I tried to watch that, but couldn't get into it at all. It isn't often I stop watching a horror movie, but after like 10 minutes, I couldn't get into it at all.

The subgenre has a name. "Screenlife".

There's a movie called Livescream that's pretty interesting. The protagonist is basically on camera for an hour, with minimal cuts. I can't remember how many takes it took, but I think on the commentary they said it was mostly one long shot and they had to start over for any mistakes.

I got it in a horrorpack some time ago, but the full movie was made available for free on their official youtube channel.

There's a sequel called Livescreamers. Haven't seen it yet. Looks cool tho.

Both of those are amazing

Idk how lake Mungo pulls that mock doc thing off so well when 90 of 100 of those suck

Yeah just of them are garbage, but isn't that the case with horror as an overall genre?

I'll second The Poughkeepsie Tapes. It's so creepy that it still honestly sticks with me. Creep 1 and 2 are fantastic. A lesser known one that I enjoyed is The Last Horror Movie.
How quaint.

That scene was crazy to me. I watched that when I was younger and thought it wouldn't be so bad to die to her at the time lmao

I only skimmed the topic, but if no one mentioned Europa Report I highly recommend it. It's probably a stretch to call it "horror," it's more a sci-fi thriller. Far and away my favorite found footage movie.
