Yeah, BG3 is massive. Even though its a completely different map, the first map, the Underdark, and another map youre gonna discover is all Act 1. At the same time though, if you go to that map

the Druid Grove storyline
comes to its logical conclusion

so dont go too far off the beaten path before you save those guys. The game will warn you a bunch before you do, so dont worry too much.
Speaking of which, what difficulty setting are you playing on?
You can go to the Underdark and the other Act 1 maps without affecting anything regarding the grove. Its only once you enter Act 2 that act 1 stuff gets locked out
